A thread on another forum (stacked out with Apple fan members) "iTunes alternatives for Mac OS" may be of interest:-

(BTW, unless you idolise the Daily Mail and virulently hate the BBC in all its incarnations, I'd steer clear of the "Off topic" threads.....).
    Thanks, looks interesting!

Edit: The iTunes alternative options, not the other threads!!

Looks to me as though VLC and audacity can both handle flac, though they are not necessarily the best for playing the files.

If I can find time (see *** below, again!) I may check out a few other bits of software in the month(s) to come.
I would be interested in your findings, if you get there before me.

*** I spent ages trying to get El Capitan installed in order to run video editors, and now I need more memory. I know what it's like to get held up on projects because of "stuff" - and also living.
It was the bath that held me up most!

Last week I upgraded to a 2 TB HD and increased my RAM from 4 to 10, so my MacBook Pro is ready. Later tonight, I will down load the trial version of Audirvana and test it through. Will post my findings/experience.

It's interesting that since using Qobuz and the odd CD, I've not had the need to turn on iTunes or any equivalent for about six months now!

Compared to iTunes, what do people think of Windows Media Player?

I'm on day 7 of my 15 day trial of Audirvana Plus (runs out 26th Feb).

              UI is unremarkable.

Features are virtually non-existent. Maybe you get features with the higher priced versions of Audirvana.

Have noticed no sonic improvement (over iTunes) in almost everything I've played through it.

I think I may have detected a slight improvement in sound quality when playing Led Zeppelin II and Mahler 6 Barbirolli EMI.

At this stage, I don't see me going ahead and buying a licence at the end of the trial period.

Edit: And it doesn't seem to like automatically downloaded album art. You have to manually delete dowloaded artwork and re-load from a separate source for it to show.

                Thanks for the update.

Where is your quote about Mr Dove from? Maybe you made it up!

Knowing how much you love the Daily Wail I found this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...sly-wrong.html which is one of the closest I got to while searching for your quote.

Dave, I don't like the Daily Mail and I don't even remember reading it, not even once in my entire life.

And I haven't even bothered with a newspaper for about 6/7 years.

I believe In You (1952, Ealing Studios).

Sorry. Perhaps Mr PGT reads the DW? I have perused copies from time to time - usually discarded ones on trains.

Thanks for clearing up the quote, anyway.

I read the Daily Mail in the Barbers, and The Sun in the Bakers ( the latter, when there is a long wait for people to e.g. get 6 customised fillings for 6 rolls).

As a matter of morbid fascination I can see how these papers work out the agendas of their owners (non-resident for tax purposes but unduly influential on our politicians) at the same time as feeding misinformation and pap to their willing audiences. Importantly, my access doesn't add to their circulation figures. And I don't access either online - I wouldn't want to be associated with the DM's "sidebar of shame".

I don't have a problem with the Daily Mail and I wouldn't be bothered to have it in my side-bar or care about adding to their circulation figures (I'm sure numerically and otherwise, I'm insignificant). I just don't like the paper. Browsed it, heard about it - seen enough not to like it. That's all.

I'm intrigued as to how you know of this online feature with links to so many dodgier parts of the internet - interspersed with what look like some more serious and interesting articles as teasers.

The "clever" part is that some of the DW's articles are really well researched and written, and very possibly by journalists with good knowledge and very possibly good degrees from some prestigious universities. Examples - astronomy, gravity etc.

Private Eye - always worth reading what the establishment, big business, local fiefdoms, etc would rather we didn't know. References in the Eye to the sidebar's various interests. A few times I pursued links to the DM's website, and on a quick look the sidebar is either dross or panders to people's poorer instincts. But as to its recent disposition, or links therefrom, I can't comment or be a guide.....

I have just realised that it can't be used with AirPort Express!!!

                                Not looking good for Audirvana.
