    There are free programs around which deal with the problem of desktop icons mysteriously moving when you don't want them to. I use one for Windows, but I'm sure there are some for Macs. If they do move you just click on 'Restore desktop icons' and hey presto they're back to what they were when you last saved them, without having to manually restore them. Try a search on 'Save desktop icons' if that's what you think you need. It seems to be an endemic problem in Windows.

      Well, I'm glad someone else has come across this phenomenon - yes, I see a DIM (desktop icon manager) app. Though that was the only icon regularly behaving erratically (and if the HD is kaput it won't matter any more anyway). I probably have a more cluttered desktop than most, real and virtual
      It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
