With quite a few recordings I now have, there has developed a distortion noise. As stated with the title, I have iTunes for Windows, Any advice here please.

Are the recordings ones which played OK previously using iTunes for Windows?
In that case, something has changed, or been "updated".
There have been problems with iTunes in the past, and Apple may take some time to fix issues.
One solution is to reinstall an earlier, hopefully working, version of iTunes.
If the files are newly ripped, then there may be a problem with the ripping process. As before, iTunes has had problems
in this area before now, and the solution is either to wait for a fix, or to use another ripper.

Did you get the files from the iTunes store or Amazon? If so, you could reload from there. If they are your own rips, say from CDs, then maybe try a different ripping tool, even if you do use iTunes for playback.
It seems unlikely that previously OK tracks will "have gone off" - so it would be most likely that something has happened in the player. Most players have multiple components and codec functions, so something might have affected them, which would explain why some tracks seem to have suffered, but not all. Downloading the latest version, or testing with a different player - we have here suggested foobar, but there are others - songbird, or even just audacity, might help to pinpoint where the problems lie.
