Having spent 2 days trying to persuade a new install of Firefox on my PC laptop not to distrust every website I try to access, and to display pages properly how I see them on the Mac, I'm now looking for something Completely Different (I don't really care what happens to the machine as I seldom use it now).

Anyone know Waterfox or Pale Moon?

Some people like Google's Chrome. I'm happy with the new Firefox but it might be worth giving Chrome or Opera a try. Both are free. When it come to browsers for Windows you really are spoilt for choice:

Firefox has always worked very well on my PC so I am puzzled why FF has had problems.

Do the warnings about unsafe websites come from Firefox itself or from the antivirus software?

I wonder whether it's because the PC is still using Vista?

There is no Firefox button to access Preferences, it says JavaScript is enabled by default but it isn't enabled and I can't see how to do it (checking about:config suggests it is but I know what I can see with my own eyes!), and yes, it's Firefox that is preventing the access (I have to View the certificate each time, accept it and then it loads) because I have no trouble with Safari or IE.

I've now uninstalled it for the second time :-)

Not sure if this is the source of your problem or not, but try clicking on the trigram in the top right corner of the Firefox screen, then Options, then Advanced, Certificates. One of the buttons there, perhaps?

Chrome insists on distrusting some of my legitimate sites.

For these, I've ended up having a special Chrome launcher on my desktop, with a command line qualifier which stops it checking certificates. It bitches with messages of impending doom, but does the job, and I revert to normal Chrome as soon as I've done.

Not sure if this is the source of your problem or not, but try clicking on the trigram in the top right corner of the Firefox screen, then Options, then Advanced, Certificates. One of the buttons there, perhaps?

Too late, Bryn - it's alread been consigned to the Rubbish Bin. Life's too short. I still use FF on the Mac.

It's almost certainly to do with the power connection. I think the battery discharged completely. Before that, I was using FF without a problem.

As I scarcely use the PC I may use it as a testing place for these new browsers. Pale Moon first.

In that case I would have completely uninstalled Firefox, downloaded the current version from the Mozilla website and (re-)installed it.

I did - twice (and uninstalled it again), precisely because it was behaving strangely.

Anyway, I have Pale Moon installed and it's looking much like Firefox in its well-behaved days. DuckDuckGo is the default search engine too, which is a nice touch .

There is a version of Safari for Windows - not used it, as I no longer have any Windows machines but allegedly current version is improved.

Yes, I have Safari installed too :-)

I really like the FF bookmarks sidebar and Pale Moon has that. One bug is that if I have, say, the forum homepage bookmarked, and a separate bookmark for What's new? I find that if one is open and I click on the sidebar bookmark for the other, it opens in the sidebar - a very long narrow strip of it. But that isn't really a necessary process anyway.

I'd never heard of Pale Moon or Waterfox before reading this thread. This review suggests that many people might in fact be better off sticking with Firefox - http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/win...w-445085.shtml though there might still be users who have problems with Firefox which can be "cured", or at least avoided, by using other browsers. I mostly use Firefox, though in recent months there has been an irritating problem with tabs opening which I attribute partly to some devices I have used. However, other browsers, such as Opera and Chrome don't seem to have the same problem. Despite this, I have mostly stuck with Firefox.

I think this is for people who actually care about speed to within so many seconds, and all the technical data.

I would suggest that non-techies like me just resent spending days trying to get something working which suddenly doesn't work and I don't understand why :-). I've tried Chrome and I just don't like it (don't ask). And Opera, which, ho hum, yes all right. But otherwise I have a functioning 32-bit browser that seems relatively trouble-free. I hardly ever use the PC anyway and keep forgetting how Windows works. So I shan't bother to make comparisons with Waterfox or Cyberfox. Firefox functions as usual on the Mac.
