Can I be bothered?
Well, yes I could. Upgraded it to 10.6.8 and thence last night to Yosemite. It took about 50 minutes to download and was problem free. Had to download iPhoto (free) separately. First thought - you soon get used to the 'Early Learning Centre' look of the icons etc. Seems quick and clean, it connected instantly to the Airport Express for internet radio etc, no problems so far. And it's resurrected an old MBP that was rather sluggish etc with the old OS.

You've summed it up well. (You can fiddle with the colours, etc., to get it more - how do you say - grown up.

Yes - I like (and have opted for) the 'dark menu bar and dock' in Preferences/Appearance - having white text on dark looks, as you say, more 'grown up' I think.

So you thought it worthwhile after all! Glad to hear it went well, and may be encouraged to do at least one of the older machines round here shortly. Was your download across a fast network (e.g BT Infinity) or a slower one? I'm trying to estimate whether 50 minutes is a reasonable time - though the limitations may be at the server end. How long did the actual install take? You may also have had a similar time to spend in your upgrade to 10.6.8. so you've been busy - maybe in the background.

Yes - the 10.6.8 upgrade took about the same time - left it doing its thing while out at the concert (q.v. latest concerts!). Then when back, the off the disc 10.6.3 needed the 10.6.8 upgrade (10 minutes) - then the Yosemite upgrade. The 50 mins was for the whole Yosemite process, download and installation - yes, on a 76Mbps BT infinity network.

As it's the spare machine, I could get on with other stuff on the 'old' Mavericks MBP!

I also like the range of 'Yosemite' desktop pics! This is what one looks like with the 'dark' menu bar:

I finally upgraded, from Snow Leopard. It took some time. It seems to work.

I've no idea. I was responding to the 'Early Learning Centre' look of the system, not the programming details (or whatever they are).

Having read (skimmed!) all of the above, I am just hoping that my 2010 MacBook Pro, using 10.6.8, does not give up for a while. I am perfectly satisfied with it.

Where would Apple be if everyone was like me?

Mostly I agree with you. However, if your MBP is one of the earlier ones - the date looks as though it might be - then I believe that battery life is better with Mavericks and/or Yosemite, so in time it could be worthwhile installing the later versions. We have a MacBook Air from around 2011 which runs down fairly fast now running Mountain Lion. My MBP seems pretty good, though it won't go a whole day without being charged. That's where iPads score I think - if you can work with them.

Battery life considerations do depend on your patterns of usage though, and you may not be bothered by that.

My newer MBP is the same as Vodka's. When I upgraded to Mavericks at New Year, it did indeed increase the time a fully-charged battery lasted. The other huge advantage for me was the ability to use my Airport Express, which has changed music listening for ever, for me.

The older MBP now with Yosemite is early 2008 and I haven't had an opportunity to test the battery life aspect. All I do know is that its swiftness has improved immeasurably compared with the old 10.5. Leopard it was running.

A key reason I am, like you, happy with the 'older' models is that both are 17 inch screens - now discontinued. So Apple have deprived themselves of further revenue from my by changing their range. The ability now to 'rejuvenate' them with the new operating systems - free - is a situation I'm currently very content with.

My MacBook pro is described as 'mid 2010' and there appears to be an inbuilt problem with that period that they suffer from kernal panics - though much less troublesome than it used to be. Battery life is not an issue - I hardly ever move it from my desk. And I believe that even updating to Mavericks would make my dear old 2004 Entourage and Word obsolete - with a price of £200 to update that. I'm really happy as I am - and turn down the regular offers to update free.
