    Yosemite anyone?

Has anyone round here done the upgrade of Mac OS X to Yosemite yet? I never did get round to installing Mavericks, though I have used machines which came with it pre-installed.

Yep. Seems good. Gotta get used phone calls coming into your laptop etc!

I had to look this up, to try to understand what that was about. https://www.yahoo.com/tech/one-thing...161392359.html

As I've not bothered with iPhones I'm not sure that this would be helpful to me. What I really want is an interface which isn't a total pain to use, and TBH I don't think either Apple or MS have done that. I want to have a large display area with sensible functionality - and indeed the new iMac with the Retina display should have enough screen - though the non Retina version of the 27 inch model is quite good.

Don't any of the developers look at what people might "really" want to do?

I took part in the public beta, and installed the final version on its release. I haven't experienced any problems so far.

I do like the new look, and as an iPhone/iPad user the integration is very convenient.

There's a long (correction, _very_ long) review/what's new article here...

For the first time in forever, the Mac could be noticed by someone.

Looking at one of the videos - the David Pogue one - seems like a real advert for NOT upgrading. Who the **** wants to upgrade so that you can answer wrong numbers or nuisance calls on a computer? Also, I really don't want my desktop to look like an iPhone.

In the meantime, is there a way of upgrading to Mavericks, or is that no longer possible?

Some are advising against on grounds of memory usage and bugs.

OS X Yosemite is the latest version of the Mac operating system. In this tutorial, tech expert David A. Cox will show you the main features of Yosemite and g...

There's no obligation to have the call handling active on a Mac, it's optional.

I don't think Mavericks is still available if you haven't already 'purchased' it.

I don't have a mobile Mac implement so the whole iOS thing is alien/useless for me.

Is there any point me upgrading from the very satisfactory and stable Mavericks I've had since upgrading just under a year ago?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I think so, I did this a couple of weeks ago
Staying clear of the "upgraded" Yosemite until I know it actually works with the things I use
There are problems with external firewire devices for a start

If I were you I'd have a dig around to see what's new and then make the decision.

Certainly Safari is now a lot faster, and for anyone using a laptop the battery should last longer using Yosemite.

It looks rather different to Mavericks too. Personally I like the new look, but not everyone does.

John Siracusa's OS X reviews are always very long, but are also the most informative available.

I installed Yosemite as soon as it became available and am very happy: not only Safari, but my entire system is much snappier than it was with Mavericks. I'm a fan of the new look and am looking forward to my promised early Christmas present of a new (iOS 8-capable) iPhone which will allow me to experience the mobile/desktop integration which I can see being very useful.

                        But
Does it work with external devices ?
I hear there are lots of problems with some software (as when Mavericks came out)

                            That's good
though I know folks who have had huge problems
and its very hard to "go back"

The only Firewire devices I have are external disk drives, and they've been fine.
