Kindle Voyage - too expensive?

I've finally given in and pre-ordered the new kindle. Almost 4 years ago I was bought the then latest Kindle by a friend for my 50th birthday. Ok, I'm a mug to be sucked in, but I couldn't resist all those improvements!

The reading experience & options with a Kindle are amazing, but I'm not sure if I read any more books on account of it. I certainly benefit on holiday from not having to cart 4/5 big books all about the place!

Has anyone else pre-ordered this?

£168 for the basic model is a bit of a liberty and nearly £240 with 3G, is silly. Plus £54 for an Amazon leather 'Origami' cover is taking the wee-wee.

Any views?

Could you explain a bit more about what you mean?

I don't want to be at the mercy of any corporate enterprise, and if getting a Kobo means I'm free, I'd like to know more.

I've heard of Kobo, but know very little about what the deal is. What are the advantages over books, Amazon etc?

I'm not sure how having a kindle ties you to amazon, other than you buy an amazon machine.

My son has a Kobo arc 64 GB and loves it, though. Its pretty much the same as a kindle fire, but with decent storage, and it works fine on amazon e books...and as we know, almost all ebooks are sold through amazon.

I can see that for some readers an e-book device is ideal. I'm afraid that this old codger has tried them and I much prefer a book. I don't mind humping a suitcase full of books away on holiday!

But when the suitcases are full of the Missus' and children's crap, and Father has just enough room for a toothbrush and some HP sauce, then an e-reader is a God-send!!!

Before you jump, check the Kobo website and see what you think. Over 3 million books, but this includes multiple versions, including free ones (though these are sometimes not well presented).

just go into any large W H Smiths - they push Kobo - and look at options - the small black/white readers have been down to about £25 - the battery will last a long time which is much more than any colour display will, if you want web browsing etc then a chromebook will work as you can remove much 9?all) of the Google spy code - just ensure you get a Kobo with a sd-card and you can use Calibre (on Linux , ? on windoze) to handle your library and convert between formats and turn off any wifi connection - Amazon blotted its copybook some time ago and demonstrated just how much control it has over the Kindle by deleting certain titles already paid for and sitting on user machines that it later realised it wasn't authorised to sell

After saying that I left it at home on a recent holiday to France and look my iPad Mini (and Kindle app) with me instead. The primary reason for this was that I new I wouldn't be reading much in bright daylight, something that the Kindles do exceptionally well. Reading a Kindle (or similar) in bright light is a pleasure, that's generally not the case with a tablet device.

The convenience of having so many books in a small device is great, plus it's easy to buy while away provided there's a wifi connection available.

Amazon has lots of out of copyright books for free.
