Out of curiosity can you search these e-book thingies for a specific word. Often part way through a book I want to go back to check on, say, a character and the first time that they appeared or got involved.

There's a "search in book" feature where you in input words of phrases to find. Is that what you mean?

Yes. So if I entered, say, Fred Nurk then how do the results present themselves? A list of pages and you click on the page you want?

Can't speak for other devices, but on the Kindle you're given a list of references to select from.

One thing I would say is that searching for a particular word or phrase can take a while on a big book, again this is on a Kindle.

I though I would never 'kindle', and have always valued the physical book but, since I have had a Nexus 7 tablet for quite a while, I thought I'd explore the freebies on offer, at least.

I now find that ebooks are quite easily readable (even in full daylight without any problem) and I have a small free library which is particularly useful for reading in bed without disturbing SWMBO by having a light on. Google Play Books is rather primitive (mainly in that you can't create extra 'shelves' to sort your books into sections) but it has some variable display parameters, bookmarks, and works offline.

It accepts input from EPUB and pdf formats, and you can use the free Calibre software to translate formats anyway.

My main interest is non-fiction, and there are quite a number of free items available, often older and out-of-copyright, from sources such as Project Gutenberg:

Ah, that's helpful, thanks. Sounds like it is a simple parse sequentially through the text - albeit fast-ish.

My Kindle Voyage arrived yesterday lunchtime - lucky that I pre-ordered, because it is now unavailable until 16th December in the UK and not much better than that in the US.

It is an absolutely amazing device - they've perfected the e-reader, they have.

I still think it's too dear. The 3g version with a leather 'Origami' case weighs in at £283.99.

I went for the wi-fi only version and a plastic Origami case, £209. Amazon had already given me a £10 voucher for being such a good customer, so that helped. Not much.
