    A heartfelt plea...

The Prom on the 17th August will include something I’m responsible for – my orchestration of George Butterworth’s Six Songs From A Shropshire Lad. I can’t attend and shall be listening to Radio 3 at 2.30 in the morning to hear the broadcast.

Obviously, I will record the broadcast (I use Snowtape) but this is the Philippines, and we are always subject to the vagaries of the weather, someone sneezing too near a radio receiver, or to a bat flitting across just at the wrong moment and interfering with the signal. We’ve just had a 10-minute ‘brownout’ for no apparent reason; but 10 minutes is enough to ruin anything. So I am anxious that I might not be able to hear and record the broadcast.

Therefore, is there some kindhearted, generous soul out there who will have a go at recording the concert (the whole concert preferably, but at least the Butterworth) and burning it to a couple of CDs for me? I will fully recompense them for doing this and for sending the discs either to me here in the Phils or to my daughter in Stockport.

Contact me either on this thread or via a PM – either is fine.

While I hope that someone here with decent kit will be able to do this for you, have you tried asking the BBC themselves to do this for you as a 'participant' (or at least contributor) to the concert? Don't know who you'd have to get in touch with, though.

I have it on good authority that the matter is in hand as far as the iPlayer's HD Sound offering is concerned.

        Just PM'd you, Pablo
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I presume Caliban is offering assistance, but I'd be delighted to help too if you wish.

They often do provide a CD of a programme you've been in, but in the hurly-burly of the Proms and the departure of the Chief and so on it might be a bit unreliable. I know people here have the wherewithal to do as good a job as the BBC/Radio 3 :-)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I would refer all concerned to message #3. It's sorted.

Where are all the naysayers who are worried about illegal taping and distributi8on of content? Are you there, Alpie?

Can I thank all who have posted or sent me PMs. It does seem that I needn't worry now (well, not too much; not…quite as much as before…).

I sent this in a PM to one member (I'm sure he won't mind my repeating it here):

My anxiety level automatically increases in situations like this - so many "what if…" questions. The amusing thing is that when I was with the Prison Service I was noted for being very good at writing and advising on emergency procedures; my mind automatically explored possibilities that others missed. I know now that it's a natural feature of Asperger's, which I was finally diagnosed with a few years ago. But knowing that that doesn't do anything to ease anxiety, because anxiety is also common with Asperger's.

The two situations are very different. All Pabmusic is asking for is to ensure that not all his eggs are in one basket in an important situation.

I don't think this counts as 'distribution' of BBC content. It's for the non-commercial personal use of one person who asked a friend to do the recording for him. That's not the same as sharing. The recording of a live broadcast isn't illegal; otherwise why would people own TV recorders?

                          Fear not, Pabs - I don't think it's a problem!

Quite frankly, I think BBC should be providing Pabs with a recording gratis as it's his piece of work.

                              Naive? C'est moi

Later reverie: In the good old days , Drummond would have sent Michael Oliver over to the Philippines to give Pabs his copy and to record an interview with him about his work on the piece for broadcast later on Music Magazine on a Sunday morning.

                              :sigh:
