Spotify query - interface seems harder to use than ever!

I'm using Spotify on a Mac under OS X.

Now it seems almost impossible to find an album - and distinguish it from others - reliably.

For example, type "Beecham Haydn Seasons" and you will observe that there is a recording with a picture of Beecham on the front, and there's also a 2 CD twofer. I have actually succeeded in "sorting" this now, and assuming that the 2fer is the 2004 remastering, it could be the same recording, but significantly enhanced, though with also more obtrusive hiss.

My query, however, is how to ensure that only selected albums are shown and played. If I see a selection of albums, and then choose one, I don't then expect to hear tracks from other CDs. Also I'd like to be able to get back to the album listing if I want to compare CDs. The issue is one of being able to consistently switch between album views and track views, and to stay on one CD if one is selected for playing. This is something which does seem to have got worse in recent versions IMO, or am I really missing something here? Perhaps there's an arcane trick I missed.

Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but could someone possibly please explain what the + x and tick signs in front of the songs do and how they work? I am using OSX.
