    Southbank evening surround sound

there may already be a thread but I can't find it

apparently some of the Radio3 evening concerts from the "Southbank Residency" over the next two weeks will be in surround sound
they say there are details of exactly which concerts but I can't find them (not that I can take advantage anyway - just passing on the information)

Highlights from BBC Radio 3's fortnight of broadcasting from London's Southbank Centre.

Is the surround sound encoded into iplayer offerings?

I don't believe so. It seems to be a separate stream that is decoded in your browser [see the link in #2 for which one and for other techy details of what might work]. There is more mumbo jumbo in the R&D blog link from that link. What no one tells you is how to get the stream to your browser in the first place. One assumes there is link on the R3 web page?

          The player is linked here:

BBC Research and Development has produced test streams demonstrating the features of CMAF compliant MPEG DASH streaming and interoperability with HLS.

I guess it's the only source for the surround programme.

Might be worth investigating whether VideoCacheView v2.66 is compatible with the player.

This has turned out to be a fascinating experimental trial. After a shaky start the transmissions seem to have stabilised to give a remarkably good surround image of the different halls.

Although the organ concerts were the obvious ones to benefit from the rear speaker input, to my ears the most successful so far was the chamber concert from the Purcell Room. The added detail was tangible. This evening's concert from QEH was another very worthwhile result.

Given that, presumably, there's not a great deal of overheads involved in setting up a couple of additional mics, I wonder if we could hope that surround might eventually become the norm? It's already in use for the Proms when on BBC4 (5.1 rather than the current 4.0), so presumably the current MPEG-DASH delivery could handle these for R3.

Following up on Bryn's suggestion, I haven't found a way of reconstituting the fragments which VCV came up with!
