    editing & deleting posts

is there a point at which a post becomes too old to edit or delete ???

I've just noticed a post of mine from last October which contains a now-defunct link, making the post rather pointless [yes I know, all my posts are pointless ha-ha] but the edit post facility isn't available for it (but is available for my posts of the last week)

    ??

EDIT - or is there some setting I can adjust ?

I think there are two 'admin set' time limits. The first is if you post and notice a mistake within a minute or two, once it has appeared, you can change it without a 'Last edited by' note being generated. The second, I'm not sure - I'll have to investigate, but I think there is a limit beyond which you can't edit. Possibly the reason would be that people aren't encouraged to make significant changes to posts which have already been part of an ongoing discussion as it makes it harder to follow the thread for those reading it later on. That's the only reason I can think of.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

yes, thanks FF I follow the reasoning

the particular post I have in mind definitely falls into the category of would-not-be-missed-if-deleted

it's just a bit embarrassing to have it sitting there in a useless state - I shall live with it

I have an expression for opinions I no longer hold (to) - ideological cobwebs.

You can always ask for it to be deleted, if it does worry - I'm sure no one would mind

I see, who would I ask ? your good self ? oh well, thanks - it's #41 in the BREAD thread - caliban's fault for resurrecting the thread

if you hang around I'm sure I could provide a list of hundreds I'd like deleted - would that be OK ?

            who's to mind ?

Mea culpa and I have deleted that post (I noticed last night that the link was defunct, but didn't like to mention it )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Why worry, mercia? The space they're occupying is only virtual, and, as you yourself have said, their presence makes sense of the continuity of the discussion. You would be just as well served by going through all your posts where you have written "who" instead of "whom", and asking to have them deleted.

See what I mean?? If this becomes common practice, we'll all need to obey the Stalinist inside our heads!

I don't recall saying that [the post in question wasn't part of a discussion]

as to the who/whom - thanks - I shall make that my next project

You are in extreme mood today, S_A! It's hardly Stalinist to delete a link which is no longer applicable. It arguably adds to the flow of the debate to avoid sending people unwittingly up dead ends...

Sorry mercia - it was French Frank's general reference to deletions in #2 that I was thinking of.
