Thanks, ff, for a perfect explanation. I guess I've never been quick enough to beat the five minute rule, as I don't recall knowingly not seeing the 'Last edited by'. Perhaps sometimes I just haven't noticed that it didn't appear.

Further thought: Do you mean that sometimes my carefully composed Reason has never been shown to the world?

Happens to us all, Don - we're sometimes quicker than we know! In this case, if you see the 'Edit' note, so do we, and if not, same for us. That's something which doesn't differ - or shouldn't.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Well, that follow on was as quick as I could type it. What happened to the five minute rule?

            I'll give it a go.

            Edit: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

            2nd edit:

Ah, I was wrong on one point: if you add a reason, it's given, but you don't have to. That's when the 5 minute rule applies. Probably the time will update this time, though.

Yes, the time updated, even though I didn't update my reason. I expect this to have changed from 11:23. Better hover a little, waiting ... time to go?

My reason for composing in OpenOffice (actually) is that I have several windows open with information relevant to my post-in-progress, mainly spelling of names and places, and double-checking dates and such, after which I copy/paste. Typing off-line I find more relaxing and avoids pressure building up (probably a hangover from previous job as sub-editor in a news environment).

Pretty much why I do it as well, Pianorak (Not the sub-editor bit, though!).

Another big reason for me is that if you spend a long time composing in the posting box itself, there is a sporting chance that when you do post there will have been one or more other posts added to the thread which move the goalposts relative to what you are saying. (I have been known to open up another separate window on the Forum to keep a check on this.)

If you use the 'compose in Word' route you can do a quick refresh of the thread window before posting, to ensure you are seeing the latest state of play.

My pleasure! Your posts are always interesting, often intriguing.

Don't let the wife see all those flowers though, she'll think something is going on, or, worse, want similar treatment herself.

ohhhhhh ! Do - get her a bouquet , they are life affirming. Anyways just went out with the dogs for a bit and thought O!, I'll return and post to Mssr Petter that I have a passion for handwritten missives. I do them most always in sepia. Conte crayons in sepia is my favorite as well. I love paper and ink and true lead, especially Mars Lumograph - - - I have taken exhausting workshops at the J P Getty museum in California in how to make illuminated manuscripts.

So, thus the colour choice for here. Just a wee bit of imagination needed.

                      kind wishes,
                      sigolene

Rather delayed but I might as well rejoin, even just for the record.

I do apologise for making you worry so. I hope you managed to have a nightmare free sleep. All is well now (after #171). I know exactly how it feels when you are told that your posts are doing odd things while you cannot see it yourself. My post did all manners of weird things on the old R3 MBs, so much so that one poster thought I was using an Egyptian hieroglyph keyboard.

Thanks ds. When ff, quite rightly, moved this series to start a new separate thread, one or two things got lost, I think. My M12 was in answer to your above post.

Re Don's post about composing and by the time you post several more replies have been submitted. Another messageboard I use tells you when you hit send that there are X amount of new posts and would you like to revise yours. Is this an option that you can enable on the board ff? It's very useful.
