Apple ipod Nano 16GB (5th Generation) has limiter/cap to sound.

I was wondering if it is possible to obtain an ipod or similar that doesn’t cap/limit the volume? I suspect this is an attempt to protect the ears? Currently I have an Apple ipod Nano with camera 16GB (5th Generation). I love this ipod for its large memory, ease of use and compact size but it is useless on aircraft and trains etc owing to the background noise. Any suggestions will be greatly welcomed. Many thanks.

Noise cancelling headphones can help. Not only do they reduce background noise - some also boost the signal.

I have a nano and also an iPod Classic 160GB, and the sound on the latter is much more acceptable - along with an upgrade to headphones (I use these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...ls_o04_s00_i00 ) I can listen very happily on planes or even tube trains....

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I have the 16gb classic too - with the volume governor!

A friend has an iPod that he bought in the US that doesn't have the EU volume governnor - one of the many disbenefits of the EU!

If you google around, you'll find blogs that show you how to remove it.

A better idea would be to experiment with head/earphones that have a higher sensitivity rating than the ones that you are currently using. This will make your music louder without messing around with your player.

Have a little think first maybe ?
You can only make a choice if you are informed
people aren't about hearing loss and how you get it .....

go the whole hog and liberalise everything if that's your gig
but don't complain when you get food poisoning or worse

I'm a great fan of loud music BUT it is important that you protect your hearing

"personal choice" isn't really the issue

should I have the "choice" to play music so loud that my children go deaf ?
I guess you think I should

When I was young and silly, I was a socialist. So instead of getting a well-paid professional job, I thought it would be hip and clever to become a lorry driver. So I did.

The engines were about 7 litre and could have done about 105 mph, so they put 'governors' on the engines so they could not go above 65 mph, so I think 'governer' for this type of thing.

After 2 years, I realised my folly, grew up and took well-paid employment and turned into the right-winger that I am today .

Here's a photo of my old work-mates that I took in the canteen.

Thanks for the help. It seems that I clearly need better headphones. I can only use the cup around the ear type. Any suggestions pease?

Hello caliban, Thanks for the suggestion but I can't use that type. I find them too uncomfortable. I can only use the cup around the ear type. Any suggestions will be welcome?

Bose or Sennheiser gets my vote - take an afternoon out and try a few in town - a pleasant way of spending a rainy afternoon in June!

Hello Beef Oven, Are you talking about headphones with a power source to assist the amplification. I use Sennheiser headphones already and with background noise such as a plane for I can bearly hear anything.

Ah! I'm the opposite! 'Cup'-type headphones make my ears too hot!
