    quoting posts in replies

If you click on the 'reply with quote' button the post you are replying to gets quoted automatically. However, if that post includes a quote from another post that quote doesn't get quoted in your reply.

In case that's not clear -

Post A is replied to, & quoted, in post B.

Post C is a reply/response to Post B. Post B is included as a quote, but not post A. Without post A post C sometimes doesn't make alot of sense.

It was possible to 'nest' quotes on the BBc boards; can it be done here?

I wonder how this will look.

      Not bad.

Actually I cheated by manually typing [ Quote=Flosshilde ] pasting the text, then finishing the quote by [ /QUOTE ] (without the spaces). So it is possible to do it but I suspect most people would prefer not to go to the bother.

Reminds me of algebra at school (not my favourite subject)

or do I mean quadratic equations?

'Nesting' the quotes can often be very useful (and johnb has proved that it can be done). But the reason why the BBC turned off the automatic quotes was that people would quote lazily ad infinitum without doing any form of selective editing. This resulted in very long quote boxes stretching back over several posts. Having to do these things manually does discipline one.

Edit: I think quadratic equations are algebra. I'm currently revising my old O-level algebra but am only at simultaneous equations..

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

John's technique sounds like the way it was done on the Beeb boards - manually, & easy to get in a muddle!
