What's with the o umlaut? All the other foreïgn accént mârks seem to come out OK, but whenever I try a lower-case umlauted o using the two shortcuts I know (alt+148, alt+0246), the message pane closes & I've lost what I was typing. It works if I SHOUT (Ö), but I wouldn't want to ruffle feathers... Any easy solutions out there?

Mac shörtcut öf Alt + u seems to wörk.
And long Hungarian ő works from the equivalent of Windows character map. I think.
In fact the software seems very tolerant - I posted Chinese charatcters a few days ago (dunno what they meant). It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

You could always prepare a list of accented characters in, say, a Notepad text file then copy and paste from it as required.
In Windows XP (I don't know about Vista or 7) there is the Character Map utility which enables you to see all the characters in a font, select the ones you want, then copy and paste elsewhere.
Start/All Programmes/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map
(You can create a shortcut on your desktop for easy access.)

Don Petter
I don't usually use the Alt method, because I can never remember the codes, so I copy from the character map. But you're right, ostuni, I get kicked out of the edit window as soon as I type the Alt+1, not even getting to the 4. The window remains open, but my cursor goes to the top of the page, with nothing appearing in the window. (I now see that that's in quick post mode. In advanced, I stay in the window, but nothing appears.) I'm using IE6.

By the way, out of curiosity I googled for IE6 as I was interested to see whether there were any good reasons for people continuing to use this old version of IE. Here is what Wikipedia says about IE6:
"This version of Internet Explorer is widely derided for its security issues and lack of support for modern web standards, making frequent appearances in "worst tech products of all time" lists, with some publications labeling it as the "least secure software on the planet."[2] Because a substantial percentage of the web audience still uses the outdated browser, campaigns have been established to encourage users to upgrade to newer versions of Internet Explorer or switch to different browsers. Some websites have dropped support for IE6 entirely, most notable of which is Google dropping support in some of its services."
A visit to the Microsoft Windows Update might be called for?

I've been using Chrome; I also tried it just now on Firefox 3.0.14 & IE6 (I haven't updated/replaced either since I only rarely use them), and the same thing happens. Not a great problem, I can always paste from nötepad or elsewhere... Just strange, since all the other alt-num accents seem to work (I keep a crib sheet on the desk, and tend to remember the common ones), but something about alt+14 triggers a return to the previous screen.

Having said to ignore it, can anyone else see it or are they all boxes and crosses?
(on edit) And it italicizes nicely in the quote box.
