    Login timeouts?

Are there any time outs set for posters?

A couple of times lately I have logged in and then spent a bit of time [perhaps too long] getting a couple of posts together and then, when I'm ready to post, am told that I can't post because I'm not logged in!! Logging in again solves the problem.

I'll investigate, but I don't remember seeing that setting enabled. The best thing is to check the Remember Me? box when you next log in (unless you have some constitutional objection!). That way, timeouts (should there be such things) shouldn't affect you.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

ff, I've resorted to checking the Remember Me box out of shear frustration.

In the mean time, if you or Mark could look at the time out setting it would be appreciated. At present it is much too short.

Okay, I think I've found it. It was previously 1800 secs/30 mins and I've doubled it to 1 hour. But this does relate to inactivity. I'm assuming that it only applies if you haven't checked the Remember Me? box, as I've only come across it (irritatingly ) with the Admin Control Panel which I have to log into if I've been inactive in that particular area, not the forum itself.

See how that goes. I couldn't immediately see how to disable it - it didn't suggest replacing the value by 0 which is a frequent method of disabling.

          Thanks ff

(I think it is best not to completely disable the timeout.)

Hi again FF. An idea: instead of 'vBulletin' at the top left of the page, could we not have "FRIENDS OF RADIO 3 FORUM" to signal proudly the name and purpose of the site?

            :)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Two points: I'll have to find out whether our licence allows us to remove the vBulletin branding. Our last one did. Then it will be priorities - I want to set up some links to Radio 3 and a sidebar with the old R3-type links.

Second - It will be The Radio 3 Forum, not FoR3, because although we are all friends of Radio 3, not everyone is a FoR3 registered supporter. They may not want to be, so the forum is being 'branded' as a separate body, which it is. Its daily regulation will be down to the community.

When I'm writing one of my "mini-novels"--as someone on the other board put it!-- I always do the draft in Word. Not only do I not have to worry about getting logged out, "auto save" keeps me from losing everything due to my computer or browser seizing up. Definitely recommended!

PS on second thoughts I had a concern about "The Radio 3 Forum" - we might find the Beeb trying to say such a title is trying to pass this forum off as having something officially to do with 'their' Radio 3. Plus I wonder if they have protected "Radio 3" as a trademark.

Whether they took any steps would depend if they want to be nasty or not. Best thing to do is just try, I guess. If they moan about it, one could just add some disclaimer like "this forum is unconnected with the BBC" or something like that; or simply change the title if there is a problem. On balance I would think it unlikely they'd be so petty....

                      I had the same concern.

I think it would be nasty towards a forum which is, effectively, pledging its support for the BBC itself (see the 'Site spiders' thread). Whatever our criticisms, we are 'friends of the (frequently infuriating ) Beeb'. My first response would be to point this out and suggest it wouldn't reflect very well on them ... (and leave it at that).

"The Radio 3 Forum" would be ideal but if there are problems you could have a variant such as "Not the BBC Radio Forum" or "Radio 3 Unplugged", etc, etc.

Yes - I'd just make the change if you can by the terms of the vBulletin licence, and then deal with any Beeb bleating later, in the way you suggest.
