    CD too long!

I recently acquired Shostakovich sym 15, coupled with The Gadfly - LSO/Maxim Shostakovich on Collins Classics. All fine and set for a good listen.

Then - only the symphony appears, no sign of The Gadfly. Then I notice in quite subtle printing on the back of the sleeve, the following - or words to this effect
"Due to the extreme length of the recording, some CD players may experience tracking problems"

Tried it on another CD player, and my laptop - same bloomin' thing!

I wonder if anyone has any tricks that may get over this ridiculous scenario? Why produce a recording that (presumably) many people won't be able to hear in its entirity???? No wonder Collins Classics went down the pan - they deserve to...

I'm not that bothered - The Gadfly is not why I bought the CD, but it's the principle of the whole thing that annoys me. Lots!

That is indeed annoying. How long is the CD supposed to last?

Very strange. I recently made a digital transfer of a 96 minute 48/24 recording from DVD to hard disc, then dithered and down-sampled it to 44.1/16 and burned it to a "99 minute" over-burn CD-R using Nero Burning ROM and a the standard built-in burner on this Acer laptop. It plays without hitch on all the various CD, Blu-ray and DVD/CD players I have tried it on. Was the disc you have by any chance pressed by PDO? I think they did some Collins Classics issues. Could it be that what you have is one of the infamous 'bronzed' CDs?

[Try popping your CD into a computer CD drive and ripping it with EAC (Exact Audio Copy). If there are corrupt tracks they will been shown up in the process.]

I'm pretty sure I have one or two other CDs of 80+ minutes - and I've never had the same problem..... very odd, indeed.

Come to think of it, I do recall buying an early portable CD player with mp3 playback facility in the middle of the last decade of the 20th Century. Although most CD player were quite capable of playing 80 minute CDs by then, this one carried a warning that its capacity was limited to 74 minute CDs.

Thank you for your help - although a bit 'technical' for a pleb like me! I can't find any reference to the pressing of the CD. If by 'bronzed' you mean stained, etc - then no, it is immaculate, condition-wise. But even more strangely, the sleeva states that the symphony is on the last 4 tracks. 1-9 is Gadfly, 10-13 is the symphony. However - when I put the CD in the player, the display window shows track 1,2,3,4 as being the symphony - which it is - and it plays it beautifully! Basically, Gadfly is just nowhere to be seen! All very odd.....

Perhaps it has been swatted? Or used as a Chinese medicine to invigorate blood and remove stagnation

              Pacta sunt servanda !!!

I have that CD (12062 - it says "mastered by Nimbus" on the CD) since it appeared and have just played it with no problems, and there is not a word about CD length on the booklet. I hope you observed that The Gadfly comprises the first 9 tracks, the symphony 10-13. Worth acquiring for the symphony - there is something icy, detached and other-worldly about Maxim's approach.

I’ve had that CD since about 1992, IIRC and I’ve never had a problem. During that time I’ve owned Technics, Sony, Rotel, Marantz, Micromega and Naim CD players (and possibly some forgotten ones!). Also works in all my Laptops etc without the problem you describe. This version of #15 is one of the best, IMV and is worth owning even without the problem.

That is odd, and conflicts with Alain's information from msg 8. Is it possible that your copy is some sort of fake/bootlegged copy, and that the Gadfly never got put onto it? I don't know quite enough about CD organisation, but I'd have thought that somewhere there would be a volume table of contents which the CD player would pick up first. It does sound as though your CD has been corrupted somehow.

Re the bronzing, this would give the CD a brownish colour I think. Maybe the original disc was bronzed, so someone made a CD ROM copy, but didn't copy the whole thing. I"m guessing your copy was pre-owned. A newish CD ROM would look fairly normal.

Luckily, the symphony - being the only thing on the CD - plays perfectly, which was my reason for purchasing (for less than a quid!) so no great loss, really - just b****y annoying!
