    Streaming volume

This morning (AEDT) I'm listening to Bach B Minor Mass with Les Arts and I cannot get much volume from the broadcast. I've found that I can hardly hear it and I've had this trouble before.

Though the volume is very low, from what I can hear I'm not terribly impressed with Christie's reading. I can only barely hear the continuo!! Anyway, there's real coldness in this performance. It's a bit workmanlike and mannered!! Nothing stacks up so far against my EBS/Monteverdi Choir/Gardiner.

Anyway, what do you think is causing the decrease in volume via the internet? I've searched for clues on the net and have found none. My computer automatically uploads the latest version of Flash.

Assuming you are using iPlayer, it is worth checking the iPlayer volume setting. There is a loudspeaker icon towards the bottom of the iPlayer panel. If you hover your mouse over that icon the iPlayer volume setting (in highlighted bars) is revealed. The settings go from 1 to 11.

The sound volume has increased marginally since the broadcast started, strangely enough.

Bingo!! It worked. Thanks a lot. Not as loud as I'd like, but I can live with it.

There is nothing that the stream can do to alter the volume in transit and it being unlikely that the source is at fault the problem is almost certainly at your end. Check your volume settings as jb suggests.

BTW I don't find the performance particularly cold. Brisk and a bit hard driven yes but not unduly so - a bit of licence with the text here and there. That space is hard to fill [I've heard several BMMs in there and it's not an easy listen!!]. Must be multimic'd for the broadcast.

What device are you using to listen on? I suppose it's possible there's a system level volume control which is also modifying the levels, and it may be set too low. Check the audio/sound settings in your system. Some systems automatically turn off any such controls, depending on the application, but it's worth checking.

Are you feeding out via an analogue output, or yet another digital output to a DAC? Maybe you're just listening on your computer.

I'm listening on my Sony Vaio laptop. This computer has incredible sound quality despite its tiny speakers!! I have the volume at a 'satisfactory' level now, but I would like it louder. I'll ask my long-suffering son to take a look at it for me on the weekend. Thanks very much for your much-appreciated help.

I'm very much looking forward to the comments on the BMM from tonight. Cheers for now from Sydney!!

Does the Vaio go louder on other sources?
