    Uploading pics

I've been trying with no success, to up load a pic. It's a JPEG - nothing 'fancy' but each time I try, it says 'Invalid file'

I haven't a clue about what I'm doing wrong. I thought maybe it was too big, but I can't find any guidance on here, about the maximum file size!

You have to first upload it to a file-sharing site, then copy the [IMG] code into your post. You can't upload a picture directly to the forum because that's disabled - too many pictures would exceed our bandwidth.

    Try photobucket or imgur.

Ah! I was wondering about this also, having tried a few times without success and then given up. Next time it crops up I'll remember the two-step process. Thanks, ff.

I forgot to say, that's what you do for your own pics, uploaded from your computer.

If you want to post a picture which is already on a website somewhere, copy the url of the jpeg, click on 'Insert image' (icon 2nd from the right above the window where you're writing your post), select 'From url', paste in the url of the picture and uncheck the box 'Retrieve remote file and reference locally', then OK.

One further clarification: I've seen some very large images appear here from time to time. Is there a preferred maximum size? Neither dimension to exceed a specified pixel count, or something like that?

I think that the size of image that appears on the Forum depends on the original that you've copied, and that there's no way of reducing (or enlarging) this. The only way I've found is to see if there's a smaller version of the image on the internet and use that instead.

I'd be delighted to hear if this is wrong and that it's actually dead easy to reduce/enlarge images - I've not seen any suggestions when other Forumistas have asked the same question.

Yeah, you can adjust jpg image size on imgur....avoiding all temptation to search for "cute cats" or "funny cats" - https://imgur.com/t/funny_cats/wkkVhLG - oops i did it again -
                - open an account and upload a few images (album art, cats, pokemons etc). Then, under your account name, click on "images" and choose one. At right and below of your chosen image find "sizes" then choose size in the box from "small thumbnail" to "huge thumbnail"; then click on the "BBCode" and its copy icon (tiny pale image of pages to immediate left of BBCode). Then - paste & practice, try uploading an image here - if it's too big or small cancel and try again. You'll be able to see the actual size if you hit "preview post" when you "go advanced" here.

I assume Jayne is right about imgur - it's certainly possibly with photobucket. I used to reduce the picture before uploading (with GIMP, in my case), but that isn't necessary with photobucket.

I work on the basis that 300-400px are about right for the longest side, height or width. If that looks ridiculously small I have another go

Huge pictures are hardest on those reading the post than the forum itself!

[In photobucket, from Library click on Editor, browse or drag and drop your uploaded picture, choose Resize and the new dimensions. Apply - and don't forget to Save. You can also Crop if you want to change the proportions/shape. This is my enlarged bread-and-butter pudding.

If you use Photobucket, it might be a good idea to check your settings. By default, if you upload a picture to the forum, others may be able access your other pictures in your Photobucket album, simply by double-clicking on the picture and scrolling through.

                    To prevent this:
go to Actions (on the library page) - Edit settings - Privacy settings - select Private and save.

You can still load pictures in the normal way, but only the ones you want to be seen by the rest of the world will be visible on the forum.

Is there a way to use a photo as a hot link to a website?

I don't know of one (I've had a quick look at the vBulletin forum discussions but couldn't see anything about it). But if you can fathom out a way, let us know

Thanks for looking. I did wonder if one could pretend an image is a video - or even make a very short video with just one image in. It certainly seems that videos can effectively function as links with a visual representation.

I leave it Dave to see if this is how he wants it to work
