    Private Messaging

I haven't tried to send a PM on this new Forum but when I try to send one it's bringing up an error message saying I need to change my options.

Apologies if this has been dealt with elsewhere but would appreciate knowing what option i need to change and how to access it or even if PMs are possible now.

It has been brought up before. There are differences but I didn’t remember that it had to do with personal settings. I’ll check later and report back.

Is PM enabled for you Petrushka? It's under "User Settings" & "Account" - link here.

Two things: One is that your Option 'Receive Private Messages' was set to No (I've switched it to Yes). This is on by default for Full Members so I wonder if you meant to change some other option? But also you have 222 stored messages (Sent + Received) and the limit is now 200, I think, so I don't know how that happened.

I've just sent you a Test message and wasn't advised that your Inbox was full. You should have a highlighted (red) Notification under Messages (top right of page.) Go to your Inbox to read it. You need to click the bold message title in order to read a long message. In fact, I only wrote 'Just checking!' so you should see it all but if it had been longer you would have needed to click on the bold Test message to see the rest of it. You still need to click on it if you want to Reply.

Many thanks, FF and Aunt Daisy. Test message received and read.

I've not touched anything to do with Private Messaging since the Forum changeover, not even to just have a peek, so all settings remained unaltered.

The error message I got gave no indication where I needed to go to put things right and was written in that horrible computer-speak that tells you nothing.

            FF works wonders

I wonder if the old forum had a larger message quota? Perhaps PM was automatically switched off after the move because the new quota was lower?

Yes, totally agree about horrible computer-speak, those error messages are rarely helpful or understandable.

I've sent the PM that I intended so wonder if the quota totally reset after the changeover?

                  Carefully?

                  I haven't tried it (I'm a hoarder), but I'd guess it's something like this:
                  1) Go to Message Center, https://www.for3.org/forums/messagecenter/index
                  2) Select Inbox (on the left)
                  3) Click on the "Select All" checkbox at the top right
                  4) Click the "Delete" button top middle (& cross your fingers).
                  5) Repeat as needed... and for "Sent Items"

It looks something like this on a PC web browser:

Or, for a mobile type layout...

A magical incantation from French Frank might help.

Are they lingering in "Trash" and need "Delete Permanently" pressing? Or do you get an error message?

It is necessary to delete items twice - the same as for emails, once to send them to trash and again to empty the trash bin. I can delete all your PMs (I think), but no way to choose individual messages to keep or bin.

Feel free to delete them all, and I will try figure out this dual process going forward

Are you sure? I've never done it before and it seems very final ... but happy to do so if you are sure you don't want to keep them .
                            You currently have:

                            Received items 132
                            Sent items 36
                            Trash 1
                            Total 169

It would seem that the best (if not the only) way to single out messages to permanently delete, tick the message in question (which you've already sent into TRASH) in the tick box on the right hand side of the message. A pop up then comes on screen asking if you are sure you want to permanently delete the selected message (which turns out to be just the one you have ticked). You then click YES, and the message disappears. The other messages you've already sent into TRASH are still there.

Presumably every message you want to delete permanently has to be dealt with in the same way - similarly to in the old system.
