Uploading images

I just tried to upload an image from my PC into a post. I got the error message "invalid file" despite the fact that the jpg is working perfectly on my desktop. So I tried uploading it to Photobucket (no problems) and linking to the file there. "Invalid file" again.

What am I doing wrong?

Not sure, but if you don't untick the box marked 'Retrieve remote file and reference locally', it certainly won't work.

Well, you certainly can't upload it directly from your computer because uploads are disabled (they take up too much bandwidth or something).

From photobucket it should work. Select the image; under SHARE LINKS on the right hand side click on the IMG code which automatically copies it (you should then see the notification 'Copied'); and paste the code into your post:

I still do not understand how to post an image. What option should I select in Photobucket: "Email & IM", "Direct", "HTML" or "IMG"? I have tried the latter three and get nothing. I used the "Insert Image" icon - is this correct? Thanks!

IMG is the one to click on. It should briefly give a message 'Copied'. You should be able to paste that directly into your post as it already has the [IMG][/IMG] code in it.

It doesn't work - or I am doing the wrong thing. I am using the "Insert Image" icon on the "Go Advanced" window, and copying the location into the "URL" box. Is that correct?

You won't be able to see the image until you go to Preview Post, it just remains as a string of code so you may think it isn't working. I've just been to my Photobucket and clicked at random on a picture, then as frenchie says left click on IMG code in the right column in Photobucket to copy automatically, then compose message here, select Edit>Paste from top bar. No need to do anything with 'Insert Image', icons, etc

Done it, I think ... Thanks, Anna. Previously "paste" had copied in nothing at all, not even a string of code. The key was, I think, to LEFT click on the IMG box.

By the way ... is that the Crumlin viaduct?

One further question. When posting a picture, should we be careful not to make it too large? Is there a recommended size? Or are pictures automatically re-sized?

Don't think so - it looks more like John Eliot Gardiner to me. (Although somebody's nicked his 'cello!)

David - yes it is the world famous Crumlin Viaduct - well spotted! (leftover from the Viaduct and Amazing Structures Thread!)

On photobucket there used to be (I don't use PB much now) a resizing option according to where the image is to be posted, one option was specifically for messageboards (it is really annoying on a small screen when someone posts a giant image), I haven't time at the moment to go and have a look, I don't know how to resize on here.

There needs to be a change of code somewhere in the forum software that allows the pictures to be resized. We haven't cracked that yet . If you're uploading to photobucket, it helps if the picture is the right size already. I think 400-500 pixels for the longest side works out about right.
