    Proms 2014

Ah! Another new year, and another Proms season to look forward too. But, I wonder how many others are like me: looking forward with some trepidation? Yes, in the past few years there have been some high points. But, increasingly, there have been far too many lows. Dumbing down seems to have spread from Radio3 into the heart of the proms. Film musak, Dr. Who, Hollywood. The disasterous supposedly Radio2/3 collaboration concert of light music in last years season.

And then there are the BBC commissions of new pieces. These seem to fall into two catagories. They are either light music pastiches: obviously meant not to frighten the horses. Or, they are of the plink, plank, plonk school, usually perporting to have some mythologic meaning, but, in reality, meaningless unless being listened to with the aid of mind altering substances. Has anyone ever heard of these pieces again, I wonder..or even the composers.

Surely the BEEB can find some good modern composers, with somthing to say, and the musical ability to say it. Maybe they would have more success if the looked a little further than the College across the road from the Albert Hall!

Yes, I am looking forward to the 2014 Proms Season. But if the past few seasons are anything to go by, by the time the last night comes round, my balloon will be more than likely deflated.

    Here's a toon for you

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

What on earth do you mean by "something to say" ?

There's not much new music in the Proms so i'm not sure what your gripe is?

I'm looking forward to the Lachenmann weekend (well we can only hope )

I didn't know there was a Leroy Anderson "school".

They are Japanese amateur music group "Musik Siesta". It's their 3rd concert at 25th mar 2007 in Kyoto.

Yes, I'd figured there was closer connection between the two "schools" of new composition referred to by Harriet.

Due to the BBC's longstanding interest in composer anniversaries I am looking forward to the 80th birthday celebrations for Vinko Globokar and Christian Wolff and Heinz Holliger's 75th, not to mention Luigi Nono's 90th and the 110th anniversaries of Dallapiccola and Skalkottas. 2014 will also be the 40th anniversary of Harry Partch's death, so I anticipate that to make up for the Proms's neglect of his music on his 100th birthday in 2001 we'll see an extensive retrospective of his work and its widespread influence.

Or maybe they'll just do a lot of Gluck and Strauss

Probably best to select the BBC Proms that seem likely to be the most appealing to you. And, if you're planning not to attend the Hall but to listen at home, then maybe select the individual works that most appeal. It would be a very odd person who was keen on the whole season. (Actually, we all know there is a very odd person keen on it all - the man at the front waggling his flag). Of course, it must be disappointing if you find every single piece either beneath your contempt or not to your personal taste, but you've come to the right place to say so!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

You are a horse, frightened by 'plink, plank, plonk'.

Come on everyone...I posted the original comments to try and get some creative debate going. After all this is supposed to be a FORUM, not playschool. The comments so far- the ones that make any sense that is- hardly bring anything to the table, do they.

                              Nor did the OP.
