It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yeah french frank left me trailing on that last humoristic hill, as well...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

Not familiar with George Borrow, then (or a Wetherspoon's pub in Dereham, where GB was born)?

              For those not familiar:

I'm a Romano Rai, just an old didikai,
I build all my temples beneath the blue sky,
I live in a tent and I don't pay no rent,
and that's why they call me the Romano Rai.

              Didi-a-didi-a-didi-di-kai, chavves,
Tika-dika-tika-a-lai, (or can be; Kakka Chavve, Dekh akai)

Your Daddus tryin' to sell a mush a kushto grai.
I'm a Romano rai, just an old didikai,
I live in a mansion beneath the blue sky,
I was born in a ditch, so I won't ever grow rich,
But that's why they call me the Romano Rai.

Tikka, tikka, didikai, tikka, tikka, didikai
That's why they call him the Romano Rai

              Tikka-tikka-didikai, tikka tikka, didikai,
That's why they call him the Romani Rai.

              I'm a Romano Rai, a true didikai,
My temple's a mansion beneath the blue sky,
              I'm a Romano Rai, a true didikai,
just campin' around, on any ol' ground,
But that's why they call him the Romano Rai.
Brilliant pun on Roma and RAI, Don.

[Somewhere in between Roma and Bologna lies Sogna, home of the Atopos Foundation who commisioned Howard Skempton's Notti stellate a Vagli. I only mention this because Howard too is, IIRC, a posh rat.]

Many thanks. I must confess to having half-forgotten the folk connection.

                Here is Wiki:

'The Romany Rye' is a novel by George Borrow, written in 1857. Largely thought to be at least partly autobiographical, it follows on from Lavengro (1851). The title can be translated from Romany as 'Gipsy Gentleman'

                          That's a dangerous request
as it has a variable meaning
sometimes its a double espresso with a dash of foam
and others it's a hideous concoction with caramel

Let's just say you won't find any caramel round these parts MrGG.
