That was quite a tempest you called up, old friend.

By hiding behind the nom de forum I was also interested to find out if there would be any about my actual self, which has proved not to have been the case. There was a serious moral lesson to be learned there, which I have to admit I conveniently overlooked.

See my post re Chanson d’Amour from Sabine & Alexandre....
And yes, good to have four-wheeled sports back!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

Re nicknames or real names - I joined the precursor to this group, the BBC messageboards, using my real name, as did one or two others who are still here, so some of us may remember who we are!
Then the BBC suggested that we all switched to not using our real names, and many of us did that. I think the reasoning was that it could, or indeed had, led to various forms of abuse, personal or otherwise. Now we see different forms of abuse as mentioned by Richard B, but I do wonder whether some of the misgivings which the BBC had when suggesting the name changes are still valid, or is there a question of both approaches leading to abuses, but some are more significant and worrying than others? A topic for discussion, perhaps.
Some people use names here which are quite close to their real names, but others have names which are totally different.
Oh - yes, very nice to see that Jayne is still out there, whatever she decides to do.

I'm not sure whether it's brave or foolhardy to post under your real name on forums. Privacy is one issue that would make me think twice because it is perfectly possible to find out a surprising amount of information about someone merely on the strength of the person's name and a few minutes on your laptop.
I once tested this theory out to a friend after casually meeting someone a few years back knowing nothing whatever about them but their name. Within minutes I had a LinkedIn resume of their entire educational and employment history. Facebook yielded masses of information including their's and their spouse's parent's names, photos, birth dates, wedding anniversary etc., etc. 192.com will give you phone numbers (if not ex-directory or mobile only), all addresses and you can view their homes on Google Street View. Banking details would be a lot harder but not impossible for those determined to find them."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

There's a fair bit in my About me Biography, maybe enough to track me down if anyone was really interested!
I've met some Forum members (including Nick, previously known as Caliban!) and I've often exchanged my real name (at least my given name if not surname) with others through PMs, or through personal emails (used when sending material that I wouldn't know how to send in a PM even if it was possible).
I hope I'm not rude: direct and blunt sometimes (but I was like that before I moved to Yorkshire, so no jokes about that, please!).

But as I remember they would say in Bristol, it takes two to tangle!
