Hello, thank you for letting me join.

    Hi all,

I can not believe I only just found this forum yesterday.

Having said that I haven't been a part of many forums before either, but looking forward to being a part of this.

Long term Radio 3 listener (decades) and I did music at university at both undergrad and post grad and then also taught undergrad.

I also worked as a professional trombone player in London for over ten years. Had a good life of being paid (not always that well) to do what I love until I got fed up with the non playing side, hassles etc and moved away to do something else away from London. Now retired from everything but still an avid Radio 3/proms geek!

Look forward to meeting you all and thank you for letting me join.

Hi Vincent - welcome to the forum.

Friends of Radio 3 may not be the most obvious title for a forum dealing mainly with matters of musical interest, especially when you come to see how many of us feel about Radio 3 As She Is, but you will find much of interest shared between listeners of the regular and less regular kind, as well as on a wide range of topics other than music.

Welcome Vincent Bach. We have at least one other trombonist among our regulars who will no doubt be delighted to meet you.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Thank you for your kind welcome!

I might add, carefully, that I have sensed a slight tone here already about how Radio 3 is these days (and the Proms too), I am known to shout at the radio more often than I would like to admit, and dont get me on the topic of presenters either. I will try to refrain myself and behave, well at least until the Mahler Prom on Saturday!

          Thank you French Frank!

I will look forward to meeting you all, but as you say, I will gladly extend my slide of mutual friendship to any other trombonist!

I jumped when I saw your Forum name! I owned (and occasionally tried to play) a Vincent Bach “Stradivarius” [ - never been near Cremona … unless there’s a Cremona, Indiana] for about 40 years until 2 years ago when I traded up to a Courtois

Yes I am the slide-merchant to whom french frank was alluding, I think.

Welcome. Glad to know it’s not just me who shouts at the radio, usually to accompany the sound of the ‘off’ switch… less so nowadays, largely because I increasingly rarely use it as an ‘on’ switch in the first place
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Welcome Vincent. In terms of how R3 is these days let's just say that Sam Jackson's April Refresh left most of us rather less than refreshed, and having many more hours to do other things - such as looking for other sources of listening...

Here in Suffolk we have a phrase which tells you how we express our disapproval: 'I din't say nothun', but I LOOKED' - just as well, perhaps, because I often listen to Radio 3 through my TV set.

Ah ha! Well clearly my cover was going to be blown quickly anyway then and "Vincent Bach" lasted all of about four hours!
Yes, Vincent Bach (for the uninitiated, this is a brand of fine quality brass instruments) Stradivarius did me good service for many years too. I mainly played bass trombone and still have an old Holton 181 around also which is a wonderful bit of plumbing. Parrrpp, parp, parrpetty parrrpp!
