Article today in The Telegraph by Gillian Reynolds saying she thinks the BBC are edging towards subscription radio and listing the programmes she'd pay to hear - none of them on Radion 3 But she didn't elaborate about how she thought subscription would work (and for the life of me I don't see how it can be implemented except on the Net) and also, another article which I cannot find about the BBC linking up with Spotify?

There is a possibility of a Radio 4 Feedback prog in the offing.

Well I don't either, but digital signals are (I suspect) much easier to control at either end than analogue.
It's certainly one reason (in my opinion) that we should be very sceptical around motives both for digital platforms, and the DRM issues that the BBC is so concerned to control.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I'm surprised Gillian Reynolds thought that. I think a larger percentage of the population listen to BBC radio than watch BBC television (must check that). And Radio 4 is thought of as being at the heart of the BBC's public service output (Radio 3 used to be too). Subscription radio would lose a lot of listeners when so much is free on the internet. And the licence fee is supposed to pay for radio as well as television.

I pointed this out years ago as one key reason to halt the turn off of FM - R1 iplayer is I guess to hit the teenage market and could easily be construed as a straight competitor with existing digital download channels aimed at the same market

Would you be able to explain (to non technical types) the dangers in digital radio , EG the technical feasibility of "subscription only" models, please?

sky tv - encrypt channel + require a subscription sim card - ok not with existing DAB but that's days are surely numbered - very easy with an internet based service - a paid for app - remember that it is proposed to add DRM into the next standard for HTML - as Stallman pointed out decades ago now you will have to pay to read a book + listen to music and, kindle-like, your subscription (+ thus your library) can be cancelled at any time.

Only thing with Radio 3 is we'll keep getting the same pieces of music.

Hard to know where to start with what might politely be called "reservations" about "playlister".

Another excellent edition of BBC R4's The Media Show today in which Steve Hewlett interviews Liz Howells re Tony Hall's proposals for the future re super-serving rich folks in the South East. Did you know there are currently 60 pan-BBC Boards? Tony & Jimmy want to cut that number by 50%!

And Angela Phillips on what's left of Leveson after the Privy Council has chucked out the Newspaper editors/owners' proposals.

The BBC's future digital vision, and the editor of the Times on press reform.

Will the BBC's 'wherenext' Newsletter provide any mechanism for its recipients to respond?

Of course. They'll want feedback from us, won't they?
