Welcome, and thanks for the info. No, it doesn't much matter whether opera is on Mondays or Saturdays. Though I can't see how the Monday 'Live in Concert' slot will remain live if it's devoted to opera. If some Saturdays will be editions of Opera on 3 it doesn't look as if there will be less opera overall, especially if they have the odd 'Opera Matinee' on weekday afternoons.

Ten per season sounds a fair amount - how many operas does the Met put on per season?
There is a matinee every Saturday during the season, which has already started. They are broadcast on the radio from early December through to mid-May. Some operas actually get more than one matinee performance but they don't broadcast any work more than once.

The complete list of Met radio broadcasts is here, I make it 23:

Sometimes if the matinee is a "duplicate" they broadcast an archive recording, and R3 has not relayed those. Like you I would really like to have a more varied selection including some from Europe which I know are broadcast in other countries. Some of the Met broadcast are rather boring if they are just revivals of some standard repertoire work, but the coming season includes a few that will not be done in HD which I would like to hear.

It looks to me as if Opera on 3 starting at 7.30pm on Mondays may mean we lose the Monday editions of Night Waves and maybe also The Essay.

          Hello HG - welcome!

I hadn't thought of that. Will examine.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Just to mention that the Met season starts next Monday Sept 23rd with Eugene Onegin. This will be broadcast live and free via the web/smartphone from 11.30pm UK time.

I'm not surprised at these changes but to be honest it matters little to me now as I rarely bother to listen to R3 these days.

There is nothing during the morning that is of interest. Composer of the week can sometimes be good, although this week because of the FilmInFestation again of limited interest, and the afternoons depends on the theme....and presenter....evenings I do other stuff.

Shame. Once upon a time Radio 3 was very good. I even got as far today seeing how I could Tweet my displeasure at the FilmInFestation but it seems that the Tweeter feed is for the gushing sycophants employed by Radio 3. Wonder if Facebook is worth signing up to so I can vent my spleen there...or do they only allow Facebook comments that are positive?

You've missed the lunchtime concert and the best of all, Through The Night.

TTN is my Radio 3 morning listening of choice on the iplayer - lots of interesting music and minimal chatter, tweets and other inter-action

Yes, TTN (or as I like to call it, TTD) is a life-saver

Did you catch that Cyprien Katsaris recital, ams?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Much of it - I was wondering if it was part of the ginormous collection of his recordings that he's released recently?

                    Later: Just got TTD

It's being shown in cinemas here on 5 October start around 6 pm - advertised as live so could well be a Met matinee production. I think I'll go for that as 11.30 is a bit late for me.

Yes, the performance on 5th October is a Met matinee. I'm really looking forward to this... Anna Netrebko only made her debut as Tatyana a few months ago in Vienna. She could easily have made the role her own ten years ago.

As long as they finally take 'Private Passions' off the air, I shall be a happy man. A narcissistic waste of time, whose presenter only got the job because he is Benjamin Britten's godson, and has the audacity to use the only piece of music of his that's in anyway good as an introduction to the programme. The rest of his stuff is rubbish.

No, RM, people regularly vent their spleen on there. Just don't expect any response! (They don't even respond to genuine enquiries about programmes or the music played on them).

Thanks for that suggestion, Ams...I'll give it a go.

                                Ouch !!! that's all pretty harsh. I certainly think PP deserves a six-month break. Is it a 52-weeks a year series ? I can't remember.

Actually I think Lord MB would be good doing an Antony Hopkins style music analysis programme 'Talking about Music' ........... ?
