Any chance we were separated at birth Flossie? - such a thought popped into my mind too

No. The key is in your words "Russian government". It's current affairs and it's the politics of the Russian government.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Would it be all right to discuss the writer/director involved, without reference to who might have influenced them?

I feat that, if all "current affairs" issues that relate to music in some way are to be placed off-limits because in some way they fall under the category of "current affairs", the ultimate outcome would be very restrictive in terms of what can and can't be discussed here; we'd all have, for example, to be extremely careful what we post, if indeed anything, about Joyce DiDonato's recent statements, or Marin Alsop's, or Daniel Barenboim's in the late David Frost's final interview, or Gidon Kremer's "anti-Putin" concert (featuring a number of major names in music performance), or ACE and other funding of musical activity, or all manner of other subjects vastly too many to enumerate here - or am I missing something?...

A the one who began those two threads which caused so much upset, no-one could have been more put off than I was by their degeneration into repetitive titfortat insults, which is why I stopped contributing to them, except to offer a link update. But there remains the problem of those events where current affairs and art meet (not that I see them as separate anyway...). If a prominent British or European or other composer speaks out against such a film, or if a contemporary composition or music film were to be subject to debate or complaint, in the media or Parliament, because of its sexual or other politics, it would seem a shame for it not to feature on the main board...

But then the risk of insult-trading would return... so I see it is a bit intractable. Perhaps such an event might at least have a What's New link to it on the main board...?

It does start to look like 'sidebarring' the Politics & Current Affairs board has drastically cut down its number of postings: only TWO in the past 20 hours.

can we still discuss the Lib dems?
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

No it isn't - it's about the art of cinema.

How about a discussion about Pussy Riot? According to you it would be impossible, since their raison d'etra is protest against the policies & actions of the Russian government. But they are also an important cultural & artistic phenomenon worth discussion. But it's impossible to separate the artistic from the political, so discussing them would not be permitted.

There was a saying back in the 70's & 80's - 'The personal is the political'.

Yes - it's politics that we can't discuss.
