I thought it would have been worthwhile to persevere for a while, get the hang of it, see what happened.

Facebook is such a huge facility nowadays, so yes it can be scary. But my own page/profile is rather sparse, I don't post regularly on that page, so I don't get any spam or rubbish that people seem to fear.

My activity every other day or so is limited to 'groups,' all music-related, things like 'Jazz Age' and record collecting groups. All members do is post links to websites, blogs, youtubes and podcasts, and discuss them all, very limited activity. And the limited activity of Defend R3 would have got along quite easily I'm sure, attracting interest from many folk who don't know FoR3.

Yes, it's gone because the idea - unbeknown to me - was that I was to be left, with nil experience of Facebook and nil network, to run the show after it was set up. It was not even any use to me because the general public couldn't see what was posted (only people who had Facebook accounts); and there seemed to be the delusion that we only had to put an announcement on this forum and next minute the Group would be bursting at the seams. And I was one of those that didn't want Facebook delving down into my computer to discover all my personal contacts and sending messages to them as from me. The instigator then flounced off to set up his own group, yelling "You moron!" at me. Finito.

Oh Dear! Well if the instigator acted that like one has to question their motives for setting it up in the first place? Your first posting was on the 26th, it's only the 28th now, hardly enough time for everyone to read it and consider joining. You are well rid I think. Perhaps you may like to post the new FB site they've set up so those FBers here can have a look?

It just takes over. I decided we wanted an open page - like the Radio 3 one - not a Group confined to Facebook users. I was cautiously investigating the possibility and having chosen a name as the first stage, I pressed the Continue button to see what the next stage was and - whoops - an email arrived in my inbox saying I'd already done it, when I was still deciding whether I would or not. I've deleted that too but had to google 'How do I delete a Facebook page?' first :-).

It depends what you want a Facebook page to achieve. I think a forum is much better if you already have a fair number of members. If it's very active, like this one, it soon gets picked up by search engines. But if you want to maximise your membership e.g. for financial reasons, I suppose Facebook is how it's done.

this complicated relationship has reminded me of when I was a little choirboy, getting rather bored during sermons and reading that page in the back of The Book of Common Prayer where they list all the people one is not allowed to marry - I think cousin's daughter's father-in-law may have been one of them

Our 'Friend' has immediately departed in a huff and set up his own Group - with the original name. I'm keeping a watching brief to see if it takes off and I'll publicise the details if so (it appears to have one fewer members this morning - and one person has already said he doesn't recognise the station as the one he listens to every day). He aims at getting 30,000 members, it seems, but I suspect he'll find it harder than he thinks: if it's what he wants, he should have done that in the first place as he already had many more Facebook 'friends' of his own (over 100) than me (0).

In spite of his calling me a 'moron' I shall advise all the FoR3 bigwigs as a) they have more clout and b) they'll be more likely to be on Facebook for their own self-advertising purposes. But I propose to push FoR3 a bit harder. Anyone who appreciates the quieter, more intellectual approach, please join us. As I say, if it looks as if his more strident campaign is a success, I'll publicise it.
