NOT if you are the management of the LPO

I suppose it could really (should really) be a sub-forum of something like the old R3 'Arts and Ideas' forum. Political/economic theory would be just one strand (already we see ideas about music turning up); or the exploration of ideas as much as the clash of ideas.

I'm not sure that Platform 3 invites that sort of discussion . Oh, well, perhaps we shouldn't get ideas above our station ...
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Oh, sorry, back on topic: and for that reason I have a slight preference for not having a separate political subforum, but no strong feelings either way.
You only have to read the "Mali" thread on world music .....just awful....

Yes, that sounds like a footbridge - I thought you were suggesting a subway?

I tend to agree with teamsaint's pov where he points out that people attracted to this forum out of musical interests in common also like to talk about politics, and with Mr GG's view that music and politics can't be separated. However I'll go along with French Frank's proposal of a separate subthread, and see how it goes.

I'm for it, ff. In fact, I have been so irritated by chunks of irrelevant idiocy in recent threads, completely sidetracking and interfering with a serious debate that some of us were, it appears, prepared to engage in, that I had half prepared a new thread to protest about it. It seems to be usually the same person, to the extent that I now routinely expect some crass one-liner or some attempted "joke" with smileys after every post I make.

Yet with others, one can disagree without this silly sniping, and gain some worth from the threads.

I for one am prepared to trust your judgement on it, and if I err, I'm prepared to have my posts shredded. But I hope that you will try to police it firmly, if you have the time.

                S-S!

Well said. It is tedious, wearisome and childish in the extreme.

Can we also have a separate "high horse" sub forum for those of superior intellect ?

No names, no pack drill, but I'm sure that we can rely on FF to wield the hatchet.

Well I disagree with the three self-professed control-freaks but then again I would, wouldn't i?

Being a self-confessed refugee from the 1960s I say "Let It All Hang Out!"

Or, in its translation from the Chinese: "Let a thousand flowers bloom".

There are two sides to this, though, aren't there? There are those who either deliberately or artlessly attract jibes and 'banter'.

I sometimes wonder at some people's inability to debate with those they disagree with on the basis of evidence, precedent and reason; who can't fashion their own arguments without incorporating the opinion that what they say is unquestionable and anyone who disagrees is wrong; who feel obliged to indicate their dislike or disdain for their opponents - or indeed reduce the debate to a conflict of personalities.

As the Greeks said: γνῶθι σεαυτόν ...

Or as the Greek says in the local kebab shop...."you want some relish"...."Yes please"

Excluding HS, who is always polite and courteous (if not sometimes surprised), the 2 other 'self-professed control-freaks' [well put A51], are impertinent, arrogant, scornful, bustling with pride, and have attracted flack on this mb, and in the case of SS on BBC boards....they attract flack and heat because of the entrenched supercilious manner in which they write....and would therefore attract the same heat (though more subtlely couched probably) on any board you care to set up....save yourself the trouble ff and ditch this idea....the mere use of right wing - left wing in a post would start the banter and contumely obfuscation.... do you REALLY want to patrol this border....you be better off making apple crumble surely....

As Teamsaint said ....just look at the Musicians in Mali thread, where the heat started with SS writing....>>If you're going to make sweeping statements, at least give them some rational basis!'....QED....
