    Hosts

You may have noticed the new Hosts appearing one by one on various forums.

Hosts are volunteers with responsibilities for specific forums or messageboards in which they have a special interest, and who read and contribute to them as members. We'll be discussing exactly what they will do - for example, flagging up Radio 3 programmes or forthcoming items which seem of interest (most obviously the BaLs or CEs). This is simply to ensure that it will get done by someone - the intention is not to restrict anyone's freedom to post, nor to ring-fence any thread topics as 'Only Hosts Allowed'.

Hosts also have basic moderating privileges: they can close threads (or reopen them if Someone has closed them by accident ), and delete or edit posts. These are being described as emergency powers. Should anything happen when I'm not around, they will be able to consult with any other Hosts who are online at the time.

I was thinking of calling them Southendians rather than Hosts, because I think Southendian's calm, sensible and unprovocative style was a good model (albeit that s/he could also be described as 'a never-present help in time of need'). On any individual messageboard homepage, you will be able to scroll down and see who the Hosts are, though they are described as Moderators. If I can change that, I will but I'm not sure that I can.

Can we see how this works out for a few months? Thread open for comments.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
