    Proposals for new boards

Just to deal with a single item that's been raised.

I started Proms 2011 as a sub-forum because, well, it's only January . When the Proms had a dedicated board it was always the biggest and busiest (or rather, about the same traffic as the main classical board) during the Proms season, and I think it should be promoted to a full forum in, when?, April/May? I really hope that by then the BBC will allow a direct link from the Proms homepage and R3's so that we can attract as many new contributors as possible.

I would also favour an early establishment of a Hear & Now board. This would centre on the programme but lead off into all aspects of contemporary music.

BaL remains a popular item in CD Review, so perhaps it merits a sub-forum (it will show up on the forum homepage). Another programme which in the past attracted weekly interest was Discovering Music. We could try this as a sub-forum of Performance, though the programme doesn't attract the weekly interest now which it used to before the revamp in 2003(?).

I don't think we want the forum homepage to be too cluttered, and as it wouldn't probably make sense to have a forum for every programme, topics, as and when, on the rest of the classical programmes could be raised on Platform 3. That's where I would propose to move the Breakfast threads, and then close the dedicated board.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

As Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival is about to start (or has it started?), how about tucking away Breakfast Board quietly into Performance and start Here and Now Board? It is the area I know nothing about but I found it fascinating to read all those comments on Are there no lovers of New Music? on the old R3 MBs. Completely different ways of looking at and listening to music.

Anyway, SMP sounded so much livelier announcing the programme, poor thing. I hope she has recovered from the ordeal of Play Me… business.

        HCMF is always in November

but a New Music Board would be good if only to be able to have a discussion without the usual "its not music" bores going on and on about how Arnold Bax is the pinnacle of 20th Century music !

Such people do exist, and it may surprise some to know that I don't subscribe to that view. But you can't stop people having their say. The chances are that people who don't like the new music will not take part in the discussions anyway.

Ah well, this is what happens when one puts one’s toes(or nose…) into an unfamiliar field…

I am a veteran of the Durham Twentieth Century Music Festival and Summer School in 1964 and 1965. I don't think they continued. Things were different then (and "contemporary" music has moved on), but I met some interesting people: Hans Keller was one of the tutors, Luciano Berio put in an appearance, Ifor James after he had been performing regaled us in the bar with some wonderful anecdotes.

Mark - 'Early Music' - yes, please.

I note that you give a chronological definition here.

As the term 'early music' has been progressively extended to include 'historically informed' approaches to Mozart - Beethoven - Schumann - Wagner - Elgar and beyond - ie it's more a matter of approach ... I wonder if it is appropriate to give a time-boundary, and perhaps if we need to define it we could say something along the lines : "‘ historically-informed performance; particularly that on forms of instruments with which a composer would have been familiar and music performed with techniques and in styles which get closer to the composer’s original conception, or of particular later traditions of performance, than is possible if other approaches are employed."

I might suggest hooking things as far as possible on to existing R3 programmes, such as Hear & Now: and new music; The Early Music Show: and topics anent (if you'll pardon an ancient academic Scotticism) .

I'd like there to be places where enthusiasts can gather and discuss together, rather than those who enter the lists with repetitively negative views.

Obviously the enthusiasts on the Breakfast thread could hold their AGM in a phone box!

Ah, but then the EARLY music which has very few if at all notable champions, such as 15th century Italian cantata or English lute songs (even with Dowland, how often is his music discussed?) might get pushed aside as they are now.

                            ff
I’ll be perfectly happy with Early Music Show.

As far as this place is concerned, it appears so! But also, Breakfast doesn't really lead anywhere else (Lunchtime Concert, perhaps?) in terms of topics. It also had a bit more point when Rob joined in. Now it seems mainly to be, What's this morning's gripe? I'd think the best place might be Platform 3; or we could try subforums there for Classical Collection &c (the CD-based programmes) except that there's not much comment forthcoming for that either.

The best thing is to start new boards which have a chance of developing.
