Peter, I think you just hit the "Reply with Quote" to the lower right of the message, and type your contribution beneath the quote in the resulting new box.
If you only want to quote part of the message, it is easy to delete the bits you don't want, but take care not to delete the square brackets around the "QUOTE" and "/QUOTE"
Peter, if you click on the words 'Reply With Quote' (rather than the "+ symbol to the right of it, you will get the name of the poster you're replying to, plus the valuable little blue square which allows people to click straight back on that original post - very useful if it's buried some way back in the thread. And then - as you did - edit out the bits of the quote that are superfluous.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

While we are at it, is there any way I can copy and paste the poster’s name into my reply (to avoid misspelling)? When I tried, it shows in a page-wide box.
Also, BBC MBs did not approve of my keyboard setting and would all sorts of embarrassing things to my posts if I used anything other than plain letters, most of which I could not see on my own screen. I am now using apostrophes. Does it display correctly or do my posts still have mini boxes and hieroglyphs? And how about:

doversoul, I can see an apostrophe, umlaut and acute accent in my browser - and they're all in the right places. ü é
