Does anybody know whether the ratio of guests/visitors to members varies according to the time of day? (It seems very high at the moment). What we can we do to convert at least some of the former into members? And is the ratio of active to what we may call passive members constant, or does that also vary?

They may well be members who have not bothered to log in? Most of the time I view the forum as a guest and only log in if I feel I have anything worthwhile to add to the sum of human knowledge by posting. So, rarelyOriginally posted by Ofcachap View Post

I only log in if I want to post, otherwise I too am a guest. Looking at the Member List there are in fact just over 200 Members who have never posted, maybe some of them are looking in or it's just passing trade? There are also usually a couple of Slurp Spiders so possibly people are getting here via yahoo or goodle and just having a nose around.Comment

Is there any advantage to logging in only to post (and presumably back out again), rather than just staying logged in all the time, as I do?

The only advantage to logging out is if someone else has access to your computer who might, without your knowledge or permission, access the forum and post under your name. I'm willing to risk that so I don't bother to sign out/log off or whatever.
I don't know the answer to the original question. Looking at the 'Guest list', the majority of visitors seem to be UK-based ordinary 'lurkers' as they are officially (though it sounds a bit disparaging) called. Plus a couple of search engines and a few bots trying to do things they're not allowed to and being rebuffed for their efforts.It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.Comment

I always tick the "Remember me?" box but it never does - why is that? Other sites (Amazon, my work "remote access" email) know it's me, as the BBC message boards used to, but I have to log on to the R3 Forum each time if I want to say anything. Should I just close without logging off?
The result is that if I'm in a hurry I just have a look what's going on without logging on....Comment

I never log off but I still have a few problems when I have to sign in all over again despite ticking the 'Remember Me' box. P: I always "sign out" when I close my browser, as I have it set to delete my cookies when I leave. Perhaps that might be your problem too, yes?

This is what I don't understand. With the other websites I mentioned, it doesn't (work remote, Amazon, local GP, old messageboards etc). Surely it doesn't expect you to leave your computer switched and logged on 24/7? Something to do with cookies?Comment

I don't quite understand the ramifications. I normally leave myself logged in to the forum on my three machines (desktop, laptop and Android tablet) and this state of play lasts for many days or weeks, even though the machines are regularly switched on and off and the forum is often opened and closed. Then occasionally, for no apparent reason, I find myself logged out on one when I switch on, and have to log in again.Comment
