    Radio 3's New Year's Revolutions

Announced today - Radio 3's special event for 2017: Breaking Free

Throughout the year, Radio 3 looks at three 'revolutions':

    The 2nd Viennese School
The 500th anniversary of the 16th c. Protestant Reformation
    The 1917 Russian Revolution

Each will be assessed for its impact in the musical, intellectual and political spheres and on the wider arts.

    Details here.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Thanks for the advanced information on these, ff. First thoughts are that the second of those has been the most successful, long-term, in its consequences for us all.

Where would we be without the Reformation, S_A?

Aside from that, in concept it seems to have a more characteristic rigour of the current regime, lacking in years gone by…

Well, we'd have a lot more than the meagre pickings of the Eton Choirbook, for a start!

Well, Mendelssohn would have been stuck for a title for his 5th Sym.

              Thx for heads-up, FF.
They look very promising target areas.

... well, we might have had some magnificent flourishing monasteries. But we wouldn't have had the marvellous picturesque provided by the ruined abbeys, the Tinterns, Fountains, and other Rievaulx...

And where wd your Romantic poets and painters have been then, eh?

Good question, M. Vinteuil. It's swings and roundabouts, isn't it?

This all sounds promising. I'm a bit of a cynic and will reserve judgement until I find out who will be doing the ... erm ... talking.

But didn't that new music initiative last January, impressive at the time, last all of 7-10 days?

This appears to be a 'triple bill'. The first Revolution is examined in January, the second some time in the spring and the third in the autumn. No further schedule details so can't say how long each section will last. The common theme seems to be how the arts and ideas reflect times of unrest …
