FORUM CLOSURE Friday 22nd April 22:00

Please note that the forum will be closed for about 30 minutes from 10pm on Friday for a vital upgrade.

This should allow the avoidance of more unexpected outages of the kind that occurred a few weeks ago.

Just bumping this up as a reminder.

Mark advises me that the database has increased in size considerably since the last upgrade, and the backup which he carries out for safety prior to the upgrade, could well take beyond the half-hour. We'll be back ASAP after 10pm.

Bumping again to remind people. Forum will close at 10pm. The upgrade may be a bit tricky, so best of luck to Mark over in California and to Andrew. You can have a when you've finished
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We don't think there's any cause to worry :-)

In order to ensure that the CMS used to update parts of the main FoR3 site will continue to work, we need to upgrade the version of PHP on which it runs.

I order for this Forum to work, we need to upgrade its software to a version slightly later than the one on which t's currently running… one compatible with that later version of PHP.

I have a nice bottle of Muscat lined up (really wanted to experiment with a Tokaij - but nowhere local has any). Every single time that Andrew and I have done this before it's gone without hitch; the same for every time I did it before Andrew so kindly stepped in.

But better safe than sorry - so we're taking every reasonable precaution… the MySQL database is being zipped on the fly as I back it up because this forum has proved so successful and its posts are so many .

I'm afraid Andrew has a lifetime chain contract with us!

Far too early for anything like that here.

Very bold.... though also stylish - and practical.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well, he does things like this for a living (I think - I'm not sure what a software engineer does ).

Anyway, last night was interesting. As the email messages whizzed past me from Andrew to Mark it was like being at Wimbledon:

It's Andrew to Mark, Mark to Andrew, Andrew to Mark, Mark to Andrew, And… to Mar…, Mar… to And…, A… to M…, M… to A… A… to M… oooh, I SAAAY
