Interesting interview with Alan Davey by Michael Hodges, classical music (I think) and arts writer for Radio Times, next week's edition, p 122. Worth a read.

It's called 'Taming the tweets':

'I ask about about the imbecility of the station's occasional obsession with social media, leading to presumably sane broadcasters like [*******] to repeatedly demand that we tweet.

"Something we're kind of working on," says Davey. "We don't want to sound off-putting, but not over-gushing either." '

I find tweets etc off-putting (NB "We don't want to sound off-putting …") but I'm never likely to return to 'Breakfast' if it's just a patchwork of short bits of background music. Even when they do play a piece 10 minutes long how would we know when there's no playlist to tell us what and when? In the pre-automation days I'm sure they used to tell us in advance the main pieces to be played during each hour. Then there would be fillers fitted round them.

Two thoughts here. Firstly he can plead all he likes but it will fall on deaf ears as 'we' don't participate. Secondly, I suspect that if all those who have requests(drop the interactivity)) and observations( too much twittering and not enough music) were to contact him there would be too much to wade through. For some reason I started thinking about that trick one could do with a looped fax message to try and stop firms who blocked your machine with endless adverts....
I do also wonder why it is necessary to bung up the airwaves with all this - surely the whole point of all this social media stuff is that it can be done online. Does the vague chance that your message might be mentioned really encourage folks to listen to the whole programme?

not sure its Radio 3's fault if people choose to listen to Breakfast as background music. If one doesn't happen to have anything else to do at that time of day it is possible to listen to it in the foreground. The evening concert can easily become background music if one chooses it to be
