    The Talking About Music board

I'm taking up again the suggestion that Talking About Music be moved out of Classical Forum and clearly flagged as for, um, talking about music - of any kind, not just classical. It might mean Composer of the Week temporarily moves with it, and will somehow have to be yanked back.

Unless anyone can foresee some loss of basic freedoms or human rights, I'll take it that I can work on how to do this. O/wise, speak now or forever hold your peace.

No, please leave things as they are, french frank. Why the need? This has been an easily accessed and welcoming board for discussions of all kinds outwith the specifically-titled remits of the other boards. The only vaguely anomalous "non-classical" thread under Talking About Music has been the Jazz-Rock/Experimental etc one, which I thought could have been divided between the Jazz and New Music threads when it first started life, but to which no one else seemed to object, so I went along with it.

Agreed. This an unnecessary move to deal with the occasional "off-topic" thread and the slightly more frequent thread drift. I can tolerate these (usually by ignoring threads that I am not interested in).

The suggestion came because people were introducing "off-topic" threads to other subject specific boards so that I was receiving requests to move them somewhere else - which ended up as being Talking About Music in the Classical Forum - which I suppose put people off starting threads there in the first place.

I need to remove a couple of boards anyway (BBC Review, Proms 2015) so TAM could be in BBC Messageboards (whatever that means - I could call that something else) at the top:

        Announcements
        Welcome
Talking About Music for threads on classical, jazz, world, fusion &c.

But I'm just taking soundings …

I'm with posters 2 and 3 but a couple of things if the wish is to do things differently. 1. I'm not sure that I fully understand the "Platform 3" heading which is probably a legacy from the BBC Message Boards. It could be given a bit more oomph by bringing the food, tourism and photography threads into it as proper sub-headings rather than being pinned and maybe the title of "Platform 3" could change to something like "Meeting Point". That would provide you more easily with options for including crossover music threads with those perhaps placed under a sub-heading like "Music- All Genres". 2. I wouldn't be in favour of the sub-heading "Other Music" or "Rock/Pop Music" because I don't think any of us would want to see some sort of ring-fenced R2 or 6M thing. It would represent the opposite of intentions which is a broad exchange of ideas. But my first sentence is my official stance.

Then we'll just drop the idea since whoever suggests any change will find those who don't care either way say nothing, and those who do care are against change - and will suggest a different change that other people will disagree with.

Surely we can move any off-topic threads to the best forum available - failing that, there's always Platform 3?

It appears that even this meets with displeasure

                  I'm also in agreement with posts 2 & 3.

                      Correction to my earlier post:

I've just realised that what I was seeing as pinned on "Platform 3" are actually three sub-forums. I suppose then that the option would be to turn "Platform 3" into a sub-forum with them, the "Internet Radio Stations" and a "Music-All Genres" sub-forum under a "Meeting Point" heading. But it's not going to happen - and it wouldn't be my preference anyway.

That view appears to carry the day, but it's clearly those who aren't affected who don't see any problem.

Anyway, matter dropped as I said earlier - even though the suggestion was that Talking About Music is given a higher profile

It's the second time it's been raised to me so I've raised it twice, but if people don't want it it's dropped.

FF: I've read your original post again and am somewhat confused as to what you envisage. If you mean bringing all music matters within a 'Talking about Music' forum with all other matters into a sort of 'Platform 3' forum then I can sort of see the point. However, I have no trouble finding what I want so my own particular view, as above, remains unchanged.

I almost always access the threads via What's New so am struggling to identify the problems Frenchie is trying to solve.
