I tried to use the B button to 'embolden' part of a quote and nothing happened, so I had to resort to the good old square brackets typed in manually.

Now a few more tests - first Bold - The cat sat on the mat. Ah - the button B for Bold "lights" up -so indicates that Bold mode is toggled. That seems tricky to toggle on/off.
That was done by holding CMD B down after selecting a word.
Now Italics - which I expect will be the same general behaviour so will need to watch the toggles -
The dog chased the cat over the moon. Now why did the B "light" up?
There is something slightly odd going on. I'm going to try to turn "bold" mode off now, and type in a few sentences normally.
Bold has now gone away - which I did with the key command CMD B. Very odd - the bold mode turned off in the previously bolded sentence.
Typing can be done in normal type mode if the B virtual button is not "lit up" - but watch that it doesn't turn back on.
May have to be careful about what is selected.
Now for underline. This sentence is underlined.
Yep - that leaves the U "button" on if there is more typing.
However it also cancels the underlining on a previous selection - so the sentence two lines up is now false.
Let's try again.
This sentence is underlined. [Now select it, and use the key toggle.]
That seems to work - let's hope it stays that way. Now the sentence above should show as underlined - which for me it is, currently.
So overall key shortcuts seem to work, but care is needed in case any emphasis mode is turned on or off. Unlike the previous versions, there are no markup codes put in the text panel, so it behaves as WYSIWYG - but may need to be done paying attention to what's going on.
I hope this now makes sense - even with the false sentence about underlining approx 13 lines above.

It is something that I find irritating in other settings(such as when I'm writing up minutes and forget to cancel the bold or whatever I've been using - just starting a new line isn't enough to cancel it) but which I haven't found to happen when using the forum, either the old or this version.

The main (left-hand) column lists the Topic: Just appeared is Prom 17 Orff's Carmina Burana. The right hand column has the Last Post (from Alpie) with the tiny blue icon after the poster's name (as previously). The blue icon takes you to the latest post.
So it's
What's New? > Topic > Latest forum posts instead of
What's New? > Latest posts
We already knew this (obvs) but I do find it clearer to see it laid out as breadcrumbs.
Edit: But this doesn't yet appear at the top of the list for me. Drat! Still I suppose I don't need to immediately read my own post againIt isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Drat. Wrote a comment and wanted to put quote marks round a sentence, forgetting it doesn't work when using the "comment" function. Clicked "post comment" and it has disappeared, but the "write something " box sat there with [QUOTE][QUOTE] waiting for me to do something... It will take a while for me to remember that, and it's tempting to avoid the problem by just using the quote option and bold highlight within the original text. That does take up space on this new layout though to a much greater extent than was the case on the old forum, so would be more considerate not to.
Oh FCOL. How is one supposed to judge the length of the absence before assuming something posted is genuinely lost? I went off to look through my post history - which doesn't make much sense although I think I've worked out why it isn't in the date order I would expect - and come back to find that the comment has returned after its travels...Last edited by oddoneout; 23-07-23, 11:34.

The link inclusion format is a real space waster isn't it? However what I find more of an issue is that it dictates the importance of the link over the actual priority of said link within the post itself. I've just included a link that is simply intended to provide a reference for a quote I've included, but because it's in a big red box yelling "Look at me" it detracts and distracts from the substance of my post.
Not something that can be changed I suspect but it does make me wonder how the modern world works - or is seen to work by those responsible for devising such things.
Related to which - I looked at "My recent activity" yesterday while trying to find where a posted comment had gone, and was completely foxed. Instead of just a list of my latest posts in date order(as on the old forum) I got something that looked like the forum opening page, most of the entries not even showing my name in the latest post column, and the entries in that column were not in date order. After a lot of head-scratching, and reading through all the entries I think I have worked out what is going on. The priority for date ordering is based on the thread start date, and then the post column just shows latest post. In other words the option isn't about finding my latest posts it's about finding threads where I have recently been active. It results in the odd situation where two threads where I have made the last posts are shown in the opposite order to the time I actually made the posts. As a way of finding my recent posts it leaves something to be desired...
However, fortunately, as I doubt it can be changed it is rarely needed, but again I just wonder why? What is the point of making a simple search into a major(and time consuming since it necessitates reading most of the entries) detective exercise?
At least all these glitches and irritations are just that, unlike the super-duper all singing all dancing HR software package imposed last year by my employer, which made putting in my casual pay claims "difficult" and which now I can't use at all, so my manager has to do it - together with several others in the team in the same boat.

To silvestrione: more on the search facility when I've tried it out
