If you examine the 'supporting evidence' gathered by the Trust you will find one bit says:

'Casual' listeners listen to Radio 3 to relax and unwind. Their engagement with the station is primarily as background noise, and their listening habits are fairly erratic. This is linked to the fact that they don’t always feel engaged by the content'.

Sorry, from that description, these are not serious listeners. Are they?

mainly because i've encountered it many times as a justification for thinking that some music is superior to others
YES, it can be a 'serious' activity (I'm writing an orchestral piece at the moment which i'm spending many hours on) BUT using the phrase "serious music" strikes me as lazy and (often) ignorant of the way in which other musics are created and performed...... rant over, back to the score

That's what I meant: you don't have to take issue with everyone (in this case Lunchtime O'Boulez) for mentioning the 'serious listening audience'. I'd take that to mean people who don't want the tweets, txts, phone-ins (now gone!), quizzes, repeated trails &c - in fact anything that interrupts their serious listening

Though even if some people do think 'classical music', or jazz, or rock, is superior to other sorts, they are entitled to hold that opinion. It's not something you can disprove - only disgree with.
