I’ve heard Shani conduct 2 programs here in Chicago and both were excellent concerts

Well, Nick, you make it found like buggins' turn and perhaps it is: we must have heard at least 76 fine trombones in this season of reliable orchestral performances and there's been scarcely a mention of the trombones least of all bass buggin#3 at the base of the pyramid. I suppose trombones get fewer solos than trumpets and horns but they have hearts of gold and are not renowned for their split notes- a inevitable issue for the horn choir. Trombones have, I fear, an ability individually and corporately to dominate all of their colleagues by making a big noise. I know I castigate them from time to time for balance issues, especially when they tilt their instruments on high.

However, I agree with you: the Rotterdam trombone section was peerless last night & beyond criticism! The trombones and the centrally placed double bases were foundation stones that supported the excellence of the whole Rotterdam band.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Deserves the five stars for the concerto alone which in my view was one of the most remarkable musico-pianistic feats I have ever witnessed,

NB: rebroadcast of this wonderful concert shortly, scheduled for 14:30

[Naturally, it started early… highlighting the bungling futility of afternoon scheduling on R3 these days…]

            Poised to record!

(Having listened a couple of times on the iPad, the antics of the silver-haired clown in the row behind us whose phone went off in the lovely quiet conclusion to the Boulanger and who proceeded to drop it twice in his fumbling attempts to turn it off were all too audible on the broadcast He didn’t half get some glares, including from various desks in the second violins who were just in front of us… )

                    I didn’t hear it and weirdly I’m strangely disappointed…

No - definitely the silent treatment

WHY can’t they just broadcast the concert … but no, there has to be interruption by cheeky chappie whoever he is; a trailer; some unconnected music by Suk…

                          What’s wrong with these people?

                            Presumably because Suk features tonight?

But I agree: infuriating and unnecessary.

Especially as it left them without any time to play the terrific encore (which was included in the live broadcast)

Still, great to hear the main pieces on proper equipment.

I suppose it was a small mercy not to have the movements of the Prokofiev spread across three afternoons, of which the present régime would be perfectly capable…
