No, there weren't cameras. Even if there were, I wonder if it would have been considered advisable to broadcast, given DB's very obvious frailty. I know we're used to seeing conductors continuing to perform who are quite elderly, but in this case the close-ups might have been considered insensitive and intrusive.

Thanks for that info, Darkbloom. I'll know not to expect a 'telecast'. I remember when Otto Klemperer was on TV in 1970 care was taken not to show intrusive shots of his mobility difficulties.

There was considerable doubt whether the concert would even go ahead. He could barely get on stage and climb the podium. It looked bad enough to me.

He's not been well, obviously, but they had been touring this concert for days before (Berlin etc).

Finally caught up with this concert . His struggle to the podium was obvious from the BBC Sounds relay as the music started much later than Ian Skelly expected . The very slow opening was odd indeed but Anne Sophie Mutter was on fabulous form and good to hear her striving less for effect than she was in her later recordings of this concerto and particularly the Beethoven.

Will listen to the Schubert later.

Enjoyed the Schubert no signs of musical frailty - a genial , very Viennese account to my ears.
