Good Emperor I thought. Maybe an obscure detail but the way he graded the dynamics in those tricky trills in the slow movement took the breath away. Beautifully even and fast trills as well.
I thought the top register of the RAH Steinway sounded a little out of sorts. Hot night I guess in London
My word he hit that low E Flat hard at the beginning of the Rondo - even caught the engineer out .

Very enjoyable Bruckner 1 indeed, beautifully played. I’ve not taken these very early symphonies very seriously in the past but a performance like this is a revelation..
Annoying glee from TS that the conductor agrees with him that the music is about humanity and not ‘ritualisation’ as PJ put it. (Can’t say ‘Christian Belief’ apparently).
Many years ago TS and Catherine Bott nearly came to blows in the commentary box over whether Bach’s B Minor Mass was in praise of God or Humanity! Glorious!

        Two fainters, apparently.
Shame that the concert is called a show, though.

Is it that warm in the Arena? Up in the Circle for this one, it seemed a pretty comfortable evening. Heard the thump and saw someone being taken out.

I thought Yunchan Lim was excellent - beautiful touch and a fully mature performance from a pianist younger than Facebook. Orchestral balance seemed a little odd - strings quite muted, percussion and brass unusually prominent. Probably just my position in the Hall (or my hearing).

Serendipity scored when I happened to dip in to hear Beethoven 5th. For me the second movement was one of those 'Stop what you're doing. Shut your eyes and just enjoy'. 10/10 in my book.

I just read the Gramaophone feature (mini interview) with the conductor regarding this prom. No particular insights, as these Gramophone pieces tend to be puff jobs...

I may be a grumpy old woman but I found it increasingly annoying to have to put up with people texting all around me during Yunchan Lim’s performance of the Emperor the other night. It was very distracting glimpsing the flashing lights out of the corners of my eyes. I checked with one of the usher’s during the interval and apparently it is now allowed , although making phone calls is banned !!

Welcome Meadowfield . I’m sure you’ll find most of the (not particularly grumpy) folk in these parts agree with you.
There are also the odd compulsive texters in the completely dark Royal Opera House auditorium these days . What are they saying that’s so fascinating?

                      Yes welcome

I have found problems with texters on the past. These days, I"m housebound! Many were poor listeners- folk visiting GB who had 'visit Proms' on their bucket lists. It is a pain that Stewards allow texting etc to continue. I suspect a majority of the live audience share your dismay but 'the authorities' are getting more lax. Keep growling please!

Catching up on this . Did not warm to the Tuur - crash bang wearing music that I could not wait to end .

As for the prim prosaic accompaniment to this Beethoven 5 - Yumchan Lim has done well to get some poetry into the piece. Paavo Jarvi is surely the most overrated conductor in the world .

Lim played well in the slow movement but the finale was rushed and garbled albeit more by the conductor than soloist.

                                Yes, welcome Meadowfield.

Haven’t been to the ROH for a few years now, and this surprises me.

Aren’t they listening to the music and watching the performance on stage?

What’s more important to do than that?
