    Yes they most certainly can

It's the "Dip in" bit that gets me - sounds the absolute reverse of what the BBC should be encouraging. Of all the possible straplines. Shouldn't the idea be to "Immerse yourself"? Seems to summarise the utter superficiality of R3 today.

It's the thinking behind the morning offerings: no playlists - just dip in. RW said that policy was to encourage new listeners to 'sample' the station. Quite where 'old' listeners figure, I don't know. [On second thoughts, yes I do ]
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Well not entirely - the most annoying part of it is that images of KD in a slinky red swimsuit spring unbidden to mind whenever I hear it

Last mentioned by him about to cycle down nearby Anerley Hill from the Grape & Grain beerfest a couple of years ago. It says it's 1 in 10 at the top; I'm sure it's steeper 'cos I can't cycle up it.

I personally miss handsomefortune on here, (see 9 messages above)

It's clear isn't it? 'Old' listeners haven't run away. If anything, maybe there are more of them...

I might agree with you if only HF had access to a shift key.

N-n-n-o. It isn't clear, is it? Since what the BBC report for 2003/04 said was: 'Radio 3 has a weekly reach of 2.3 million and a share of 1.2%. The average audience age is 57.' An average weekly reach of 2.3m. Compared with 1.884m last quarter and a share of 1%. I put 'old' in quotes because I didn't mean strictly 'elderly' in this context, but old rather than new. The more likely solution (in my view) is that Radio 3 has lost listeners in the 45-55 age group, or thereabouts, meaning that the smaller audience is left with a higher average age.

                    When I said
RW said that policy was to encourage new listeners to 'sample' the station. Quite where 'old' listeners figure, I don't know. [On second thoughts, yes I do ]
I was meaning that there was all this attention paid specifically to the 'new' listeners, what was there specifically for the 'old'? Composer of the Week for one hour a day?

                      They’ve gone mad this year

… Next Friday’s programming on R3 is basically one long trailer from 6.30am to 6.59pm

Like the notorious nationwaide oath of allegiance, It confirms my belief that the people who make these decisions are out of touch with normal people and , indeed, reality.

Indeed - and with knobs on in this case. Why bash the existing audience? I think it's a fair assumption, especially given the hyperactive trail Service over the last weeks that the R3 audience already has some inkling that the Proms are about to start. What happened to attracting new audiences? Bludgeoning us with Petroc et al won't change decisions about what concerts to listen to (if any), and just cause more irritation if this year's offering is not appealing due to inclusion of what a good few perceive to be non-Proms repertoire. Will there even be any music? I suppose there will be, but since there's no indication what and when I doubt I'll be alone in simply not bothering to switch on at all.
What advertising push is being put on the other stations to attract non-core listeners and those who don't know about the Proms? Don't waste a stamp on a postcard, we all know the answer to that!
I see that Wimbledon and TOTP regurgitations take priority over the Proms on Beeb TV - what are the chances of the First Night on BBC2 being allowed to overrun if there's still play at 9pm?

I agree completely on irksome Proms trails. Last night while searching for Wimbledon coverage, (which they tend to switch confusingly from channel to channel to another) I happened upon The One Show (One of the Shows I never usually watch, I hasten to point out) and noticed Petroc T chatting about the Proms. Next to him sat Katya Adler. I had no idea she was presenting the Proms this year (maybe because I have avoided all the trails). She is usually admirable and will, I hope, do a good job. I did not stay with the programme very long but they seemed to be doing a decent job of enthusing about the Proms for a "non-core audience".
