Proms 2023 - what is in your diary ?

Proms schedule up - I had no idea Makela and Yuja Wang were a couple as the Times suggests this morning and they will be at the Proms - Rattle/LSO in Mahler 9 - the excellent Marin Alsop back for the Last Night .

All sounds promising now off to read the full programme.

Proms 2023 list is now out

...and this time they have managed a Proms list by composer. (go to: list by artist page and there is a tab showing by composer)

I heard on R4Today, that Rattle had refused unless BBC Singers were reprieved.

I have much to choose from.

Lots of excellent stuff this year - Benjamin Grosvenor appears twice ,Tetzlaff to play the Elgar concerto , Sarah Connolly singing Alma Mahler songs , just for starters . Most interesting programme in years and Makela and Wang are here with the BBCSO and he conducts Belshazzar’s Feast in the second half . An excellent pair of concerts from the Budapest FO with Andras Schiff too.

A quick first run through of the season indicates an improvement on last year but with sky-rocketing hotel prices in London I'll need to be highly selective in those I decide to attend. The LSO/Rattle is the obvious stand out once again but some good stuff from the Budapest FO as well. Also like the typically off-beat programme from Jurowski and the Berlin Radio SO.

The days of going to a dozen or so Proms in the season has been killed off by the rip-off hotel costs. I could find a good, if basic, hotel room for £30 in the 1990s. The same now is around £200.

From the online listing: "Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 10 in F sharp minor (compl. Deryck Cooke)(72 mins)". "compl."

No! It's a performing version of the sketches, not a completion.

However, with the Berg Violin Concerto opening the concert, I might just try to attend this one. Loss of the previous late-night bus service home makes it less likely, however Thank-you Reading Buses, NOT!

The rise in hotel prices since pre lockdown is the order of 40 to 50 per cent . So a £150 hotel room is now £220. That £70 increase is more than the price than a couple of ok proms tickets. A night at the opera for 2 is now £750 for me with rail travel and hotel. No wonder there are plenty of spare seats these days.

As my costs also include rip-off rail travel tickets, rip-off food prices plus concert tickets, some tough decisions will have to be made.

The proms ticket prices are the only element that aren’t a ripoff . If the prices in the RAH bars are anything like they were pre lockdown then it’s definitely a case of BYO . ( I mean bottle not case obvs)

One or two interesting concerts for 2023 Proms this year, but for the most part, predictable and boring, the same year in and year out: do we need to have the Planets and the Rite of Spring trawled out once again, I suppose that this is the BBC's commitment to contemporary music. It makes my blood boil that there is not a sniff of the music of Arnold Bax in his 140th year. Shame upon you.

Spoilt for choice, as always. At first glance, #47 Les Siècles: Ligeti and Mozart, with Faust and Melnikov. #29 Dunedin Consort: Bach and Mozart C minor mass. #39 Budapest Fest Orch with Schiff: Bartok third concerto, more Ligeti, and an Eroica to replace the one that never happened last year. #27 BBC SO and Yuja Wang. #55 Boston SO with Thibaudet, including the Gershwin Concerto, etc.

On the minus side, there seem to be fewer big European orchestras than usual. The Berlin and Vienna have alternated in recent years, but neither are coming this time. And we're missing out on the West-Eastern Divan with Barenboim conducting the Brahms 2nd Symphony and Argerich playing the first Chopin Concerto that they are taking to Köln, Lucerne, Salzburg and Berlin this summer. Barenboim is probably limiting his schedule for health reasons, but perhaps post-Brexit difficulties in playing the UK and a reduced BBC budget are threatening the status of the 'greatest music festival in the world'.

Not just a couple but an item as well!

Was very much hoping Benjamin Grosvenor would be doing Rach 2, as I knew he'd performed it earlier this year or last! Many terrific programmes, in my view.

If anybody's interested I've managed to coax my code into producing a draft single page listing, here. It needs checking before I announce it formally, so if anyone spots any errors or omissions, I'd be very grateful if you could let me know!

Every year I look at the list of forthcoming Proms and express disappointment at the lack of the music I'd like them to play (only two pieces by Haydn, one piece by Schubert and Hindemith, only one piece by Vaughan Williams and that's , of course, 'The Lark Ascending' yet again) and the continued progressive erosion of classical in favour of non-classical music. But when it starts I find several concerts I do actually enjoy. It's still not worth the licence fee, though.
