Thought I’d try and create a new thread - partly as an experiment but largely to flag up Stephen Hough’s magnificent playing of Rach PC 1 . I’m keeping it brief as I gather the forum May be suspended at a seconds notice .

Still trying to work out how to move posts. Wondered who Phil Wrigglesworth was.

NB There is a separate thread for comments on this Prom

Hi Alison . A tremendous Mahler 1 with a superb sound balance - an appropriately triumphant concert for the return of the forum. I think it’s been a strong start to the season though I wasn’t over enamoured with the embellishments in the Vivaldi last night.

            It was astonishing wasn’t it!

            Haven’t heard the Mahler yet…
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I only caught the Rachmaninov 1 - very fine indeed.

For some unfathomable reason, I hadn't included this one in my main Proms booking. It was (understandably) sold out, so I ended up promming in the Gallery, where I was pleasantly surprised by how well it sounded at that altitude, and I managed to get a good view. Excellent concert. 'Ablaze the Moon' is a fine piece, Hough was great in the Rach 1, and I was really impressed by the BBC Phil and Wigglesworth there and in the Mahler.

The Mahler is a top drawer performance, I was gripped from the first bar to the very end. What an exciting experience for the students to be part of this!!.

I caught up with the Mahler 1 tonight . Deserves the praise especially the finale which sometimes does not hang together as well as it did that night.
