It is reported that British immigration officials spend a disproportionate amount of time trying to establish whether or not an applicant is gay, through the use of lurid and humiliating questioning, than trying to establish if they are in danger of persecution in their homelands.
All this in spite of clear guidelines that such an approach is unacceptable
Such questioning and humiliation is all too reminiscent of the attitudes of the homophobic ‘hunters’ in Russia who see persecuting lesbians and gay men to the point of violence, torture and even death as some sort of sport.
Does Cameron know that this line of immigration questioning is going on? Arguments around boycotting the Sochi Winter Olympic Games on human rights grounds would be certainly undermined if British officials were known to adopt such an approach.
Meanwhile the Peter Tachell Foundation has urged the IOC has been urged to insist that Russian authorities lift their ban on a LGBT Pride House at the Sochi Winter Olympics, and require the Russians to give assurances that gay athletes have not been denied selection for the country’s Olympic team.
It all rather puts the squeals from some about equal marriage into context, I feel.
