Doesn't bear thinking about, apparently - according to a BB "celeb" on this morning's Wright Stuff. No one thought to mention that this is the only society which encourages massive wealth in the hands of those who (unchallenged in mainstream political thinking), arrogantly claim to be "the creators of (said) wealth"; encourages greed and "human nature"-bashing religion and so-called "evolutionary psychology" and convenient scapegoating to justify authoritarianism; and promulgates wasteful unsystemic and unsustainable growth and waste of natural and human resources.

The aim of this report is, hence, to look into sound empirical studies - based on multivariate analysis - which examine the effect of income inequality on important social outcomes related to (i) well-being, (ii) criminality, (iii) health, (iv) social capital, (v) education, (vi) political participation and (vii) female labor market participation. The upshot of this literature review is that higher criminality, reduced political agency and, to some extent, lower social capital formation and well-being appear to be tangible illustrations of the wastage produced by rising income inequality. In addition, there are a number of self-reinforcing loops linked to inequality. A clear illustration of this is the role of inequality in reducing the voting participation of the low income groups and the concomitant consequences in terms of redistributive policies and therefore on income disparities

when The Spirit Level was first published the establishment economists went for it with a vengeance; in contrast none of them went for Marmot's work in The Status Syndrome which quite conclusively shows poorer health and mortality for the lower levels and health and long life for the wealthy .... since Marmot convincingly argues for Control/Autonomy and Social Support as the critical variables not £££££, and focuses upon health rather than wider social implications the establishment commentariat seems to have left his work alone nonetheless the ramifications of his book are as radical as The Spirit Level if not more so since increasing the autonomy and supportive relationships and educationa attainments of poorer people requires radical social and political change

Thank you for this link, calum.

It's a pity that since this is a report sponsored by the European Commission (which is described as a "corporate author") it has not had more influence in policy-making, given that current EU policies, like those elsewhere in the world, seem to be directed towards intensifying income inequality.

Shows how things have slipped when Jenkins comes over as left-thinking in today's climate - until he praises IDS. Some people on here think the old left/right positions outdated; the truth is that the goalposts have just been moved to the right.

I had woken up this morning all prepared to have a good, healthy rant on here, after hearing Toady presenters skew criticism of the little Milliband promises by way of alternatives for the umpteenth time in favour of "what businees thinks", but found after doing the washing up and hoovering that the urge had harmlessly dispelled.
