Looks pretty straight forward to me, but enlighten us. What is it we're not getting?

Or maybe it is just what it is - a combination of Islam's inability to cope with modern society, and the expected liberty-taking from people who are encouraged to behave in this way?

      I have no idea
I don't know the people or situation in question
and was just musing on the fact that these things usually turn out to be something completely different to what one reads in the media !
BUT I would bet good money that it's not really about "Islam's" inability as for the vast majority of followers it seems fine to sell beer, fags, bacon and so on

If you are a Vegan I would suggest a job at Smithfield is probably a bad career move

Is it different from the "christians" who refuse to allow Gay people to stay in their B&B ?
      OR the "christian" registrar ?

The box for the frogs seems very large indeed .......

Anyway shouldn't you be massing on the cliffs of Dover with you other kipper mates brandishing pitchforks to repel the swelling armies of Bulgarians who have taken over Calais and are preparing their long boats ? (or are the kippers on the cliffs like the mythical lemmings ? )

Why do you think it's not about Islam's inability to cope with modern society?

Because it seems to be about SOME peoples inability to cope
you could argue the same about Christianity
BUT most followers of both of those stories are fine about people being gay, eating pork etc etc
it's just the satanic black metal CD's they seem to have a problem with ;-)

The girl is misguided and most of the reason is that her religion ill-equips her for living in a multi-cultural, diverse society.

Presumably this person is old enough to sell alcohol and so is better described as a woman.

Hardly an important point to the discussion in hand.

I was making the point that the person in question is a fully-formed adult rather than your implication that she is a child.

And where does that take the discussion?

How do you know that she is a fully-formed adult? And what does that mean anyway? (That sounded a bit GongGongesque!)

Responsible for her actions, as you & I are. Your use of 'girl' seemed to suggest that she may have been coerced into behaving as she has. However apparently she has behaved in this way because of the rules of her religion. Other Muslims behave differently about alcohol. So is it a religious question or a cultural one?

She says it was her religion and I'm happy, for the sake of this discussion, to go with that.

I'm still curious about 'fully-formed' adults, as opposed to people that have reached 18 (is that the age that you mean regarding old enough to sell alcohol?).

Some supermarkets employ people under 18 to work on check-outs but they have to receive a key-stroked sanction from a supervisor before they can sell alcohol.

My point about religion and culture is that it is at the point of interplay of the two forces that differences in interpretation appear. So some Muslims will not touch alcohol, while others will. Some Jews will not eat pork, but others will. Some Christians abhor lesbians and gay men, but others don't.But in each case, which is the dominant force at work?

Regarding culture/religion, I understand your point. I am a Christian, an agnostic Christian, so for all intents and purposes, my condition is cultural. I am able to be so conditioned due to the inexorable adjustments and changes that Christianity has made in response to changing circumstances and developments in human thinking. And whether these changes have been proactive or reactive on the part of the Christianity, is neither here nor there.

I will not hear a word against M & S since they had the good sense not to destroy the case I inadvertently left in their Euston Station branch yesterday, and did not attempt to retrieve for at least half an hour.

'Fully-formed' in the sense of having the full complement of rights and responsibilities. There are many things that a person under 16 is not allowed to do by Law. These restrictions are fully removed by age 18. Between the ages of 16 and 18 people acquire some rights & responsibilties of an adult but not all.
